The Prayers of St. Paul (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Prayers of St. Paul There are few more precious subjects for meditation and imitation than the prayers and intercessions of the great Apostle. He was a man of action because he was first and foremost a man of prayer. To him both aspects of the well-known motto were true To pray is to labour, and To labour is to pray. The Prayers of St. Paul

Book Description

Excerpt from The Prayers of St. Paul: Being an Analysis and Exposition, Devotional Portion of the of Writings However symmetrical and perfect these sentences are as statements of Christian doctrine, it is their exhibition of Christian privilege that has always made them so precious to-the devout. AS such only they give out all their beauty. This really explains their origin. When soever the Apostle approaches the higher Christian life, and the exceeding greatness of the power and promise of God, and the innermost secrets of the provisions of the Christian covenant, we perceive him, as it were, changing his voice: doctrine, precept, exhortation give place to prayer; the pen is laid down, and the sentence finished in ardent praise or intercession, to be afterwards written under the suggestion of the Holy Ghost, just as it left his heart. In some instances - such as the opening prayer to the Colossians and those that abound in the Thessalonian Epistles - the words go Off into petition and return again without disturbing the order, only leaving their richer sanctity on the text. In others again - most notably in the middle Of the Ephesians - there is an intentional suspension of the theme, and the prayer is as deliberate and set as when the Apostle knelt with the same Ephesians by the sea-shore; as clear and sharply defined as if it had been let into the body of the Epistle; perfect throughout from the bending of the knees and the orderly approach. St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans God forbid that any words that ever drop from my lips should seem to cast the smallest shadow of doubt on that great truth, God so loved the world that He gave His Son!' But God forbid, equally, that any words of mine should seem to favour the, to me, . Repellent idea that the infinite love of God disregards the character of the man on whom it falls. There are manifestations of that loving heart which any man can receive; and each man gets as much of the love of God as it is possible to pour upon him. But granite rock does not drink in the dew as a flower does; and the nature of the man on whom God's love falls deter mines how much, and what manner of its manifesta tions shall pass into his true possession, and what Shall remain without. So, on the whole, we have to answer the questions, Does God love any? Does not God love all? Does God specially love some with the one monosyllable, Yes. And so, dear brethren, let us learn the path by which we can pass into that blessed community of those on whom the fullness and sweetness and tenderest tender ness of the Father's heart will fall. If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him.' Myths tell us that the light which, at the beginning, had been diffused through a nebulous mass, was next gathered into a sun. So the universal love of God is concentrated in Jesus Christ; and if we have Him we have it; and if we have faith we have Him, and can say, 'neither life, nor death, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.' The Life and Letters of St. Paul (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Paul Life of Our Lord and Saviour jesus Christ, I undertook the task of preparing a Life of St. Paul and during the interval much has happened to delay its execution. When I under took it, I was minister in the remote Scottish parish of Tulliallan and presently, toward the close of the year 1907, I was translated to St. Andrew's Church in the Perthshire town of Blairgowrie, where I ministered for two happy years. The employments of that large and delightful charge en grossed my time and taxed my scanty strength, leaving me small leisure all the less that my service in preaching was widely requisitioned, and I was continually engaged in the ministry of my British Weekly Correspondence. Then, quite unexpectedly, I was invited by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland to occupy the Chair of Theology in the Londonderry College. Reluctant though I was to leave a people whom I loved and a ministry so rich ahd glad and venture among strangers and untried responsi bilities, I could not but recognise the voice of God in an urgent call addressed to.me not only without solicitation on my part but despite my express will and now, as I review my experience, I bless His gracious providence and thank fully acknowledge the goodness and mercy which have attended me and mine since our coming here. Book Description

Excerpt from The Divine Authority of the Old and New Testament Asserted Pretenfion to this Charaéter. I would be one Of the lafl to charge any Man with a Want of Honefiy and Sincerity: but there are ma ny Things in his Book that look like a wilful Perverfion and Mifreprefentation of Faéts, as well as Arguments and fometimes fo circum fianced, that it is fcarce pofiible for the molt extenfive Charity to fuppofe that it'was owing to mere Ignorance. Perhaps the Author him felf would not be willing to accept of this A pology. I cannot help looking upon it as an Honour to Chrifiianity, that its Adveifaries find themfelves obliged to take fuch Methods as thefe, in order to carry on their Defigns a gainft it. Does not this argue a fecret Con fcioufnefs that they can never prevail by a fair Attack upon the Scriptures For furely he muf't be either very wicked or very foolilh, that would have recourfe to fuch bafe Arts as thefe to ferve his Caufe, if he thought his End could be anfwered without it, and that fair and juft Reafoning, and an equal candid Ma nagement would do as well. Saint Paul (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Saint Paul We have visited together Ephesus and Antioch, Philippi and Thessalonica, Athens and Corinth, Colossae and Laodicea. Never, upon these difficult and dangerous routes, did I hear thee murmur; as in our journeyings, so in the free pursuit of truth, thou hast never said to me, "Pause." At Seleucia, upon the disjointed blocks of the old mole, we somewhat envied the apostles who set out from there to conquer the world, filled with so fervent a faith in the speedy coming of the kingdom of God. Of a truth, those expectations of something material and near at hand infused into their action an energy which we no longer possess. But, though less determined in form, still is our faith in the ideal reign none the less strong. All is symbol and dream here below. Descartes was right in not believing in the reality of the world until he had satisfied himself of the existence of God. Kant was right in doubting everything until he had discovered duty. Evolution and the Need of Atonement (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief.
