The book is intended to describe the basic and newly developed elements of the physics of solids and materials science on mechanical properties of metals with as much continuity as is possible. Particular emphasis has been placed in atomistic and fractal approaches and continuum theory of dislocations is also introduced. Since the book is meant for the two main topics of progress in recent years, some interesting and important topics which have not been discussed or introduced are given in detail. For a long time, pair potentials were used very expensively in simulation studies. They can reproduce usefully total energies for many systems. But when one turns to elastic properties, fracture of surfaces, and the vacancy formation energy, deficiencies and limitations begin to emerge. These limitations of the simple pair potential approximation have been addressed by the development of empirical many-body potentials which is the major theme of our book.Over a decade or more, diverse scientists have recognized that many of the structures common in their experiments have a special kind of geometrical complexity. The key to this progress is the recognition that many random structures obey a symmetry that objects look the same on many different scales of observation. The concept of fractals was introduced by Mandelbrot and applied to fractures by himself and collaborators. Their work pointed to a correlation between toughness and the fractal dimension. Our interest is the fractal aspects of fractured surfaces. We will discuss more in our book. The strain field of a dislocation has a long range part and this part can be discussed rigorously from elasticity theory. Recent progress in elastic strain fields and dislocation mobility were made by Indenbom and Lothe. The elementary essentials will be introduced in our book.

A quick and easy to use source for qualified thermal properties of metals and alloys. The data tables are arranged by material hierarchy, with summary tables sorted by property value. Values are given for a range of high and low temperatures. Short technical discussions at the beginning of each chapter are designed to refresh the reader's understanding of the properties and units covered in that section

This book is intended to serve as core text or handy reference on two key areas of metallic materials: (i) mechanical behavior and properties evaluated by mechanical testing; and (ii) different types of metal working or forming operations to produce useful shapes. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into two parts. The first part contains nine chapters which describe tension (including elastic stress – strain relation, relevant theory of plasticity, and strengthening methods), compression, hardness, bending, torsion – pure shear, impact loading, creep and stress rupture, fatigue, and fracture. The second part is composed of seven chapters and covers fundamentals of mechanical working, forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing of flat strip, round bar, and tube, deep drawing, and high-energy rate forming. The book comprises an exhaustive description of mechanical properties evaluated by testing of metals and metal working in sufficient depth and with reasonably wide coverage. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner and includes many solved problems. More than 150 numerical problems and many multiple choice questions as exercise along with their answers have also been provided. The mathematical analyses are well elaborated without skipping any intermediate steps. Slab method of analysis or free-body equilibrium approach is used for the analytical treatment of mechanical working processes. For hot working processes, different frictional conditions (sliding, sticking and mixed sticking–sliding) have been considered to estimate the deformation loads. In addition to the slab method of analysis, this book also contains slip-line field theory, its application to the static system, and the steady state motion, Further, this book includes upper-bound theorem, and upper-bound solutions for indentation, compression, extrusion and strip drawing. The book can be used to teach graduate and undergraduate courses offered to students of mechanical, aerospace, production, manufacturing and metallurgical engineering disciplines. The book can also be used for metallurgists and practicing engineers in industry and development courses in the metallurgy and metallic manufacturing industries.

Determination of the Mechanical and Technological Properties of Metals presents the principal types of testing machine and equipment. This book provides a brief description of the methods for determining the principal mechanical and technological properties of metals. Organized into three chapters, this book begins with an overview of mechanical testing of metals subdivide into static, dynamic, and fatigue testing depending of the method of load application as a function of time. This text then describes weld metal working under tensile loading conditions. Other chapters consider the various methods for the determination of the technological properties of metals, including longitudinal turning method and face turning method. This book discusses as well the methods of determining the machinability of metals, including two-tool test procedure, drilling test, and temperature test. This book is a valuable resource for students taking practical laboratory courses in metal working at technical colleges. Laboratory personnel will also find this book useful.

Calculated Electronic Properties of Metals covers the significant advances in understanding of condensed systems containing many atoms. This book is divided into five chapters that specifically present electronic property calculations based on three fundamental approximations, namely, the local density treatment of electronic exchange and correlation, the "muffin-tin" approximation, and the neglect of relativistic effects. These approximations limit the range of systems for which these calculations can be expected to be accurate to metals comprised of atoms possessing fewer that approximately 50 protons. A chapter focuses on the calculation of electron and state densities of numerous metals. The concluding chapter describes the results of spin-polarized energy-band calculations for iron, cobalt, and nickel. This book will prove useful to chemists, researchers, and students.

This junior/senior textbook presents fundamental concepts ofstructure property relations and a description of how theseconcpets apply to every metallic element except iron. Part One of the book describes general concepts of crystalstructure, microstructure and related factors on the mechanical, thermal, magnetic and electronic properties of nonferrous metals, intermetallic compounds and metal matrix composites. Part Two discusses all the nonferrous metallic elements from twoperspectives: First it explains how the concepts presented in PartOne define the properties of a particular metallic element and itsalloys. Second is a description of the major engineering uses ofeach metal. This section features sidebar pieces describingparticular physical property oddities, engineering applications andcase studies. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutionsto all the problems in the book is available from the Wileyeditorial department. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all theproblems in the book is available from the Wiley editorialdepartment.
