Contributions to Abdominal Surgery (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Contributions to Abdominal Surgery Barnard's premature death is a loss to Surgery. From the commencement of his career on the Staff of the London Hospital, he was attracted to Abdominal Surgery, and his more important communications to various societies and to the medical papers dealt with this. His last work, on Subphrenic Abscess, published the year of his death, was universally recognized as a great advance on previous knowledge, and has done much to clarify our ideas on what is one of the most difficult subjects in this branch of Surgery; careful perusal of this work, putting into practice its teachings, will be the means of saving many lives. Barnard had been working for several years at the subject of Intestinal Obstruction, and had planned an exhaustive treatise. The first - fruits of his work were his articles on Gall-stone Obstruction in the Annals of Surgery, embodied in his later work on this subject, and his lectures on Intestinal Obstruction at the Medical Graduates' College and Polyclinic. The book was put on one side while he was engaged on his article for Allbutt and Rolleston's " System of Medicine." It is only necessary to glance at the work to see what a tremendous amount of labour it involved; it is a mine of information and of personal observation. A small committee, consisting of Mr. Hugh Barnard, Professor Arthur Keith, Dr. Cecil Wall, and myself, met on Harold Barnard's death to discuss the best form a memorial should take. Text Book of Abdominal Surgery

Book Description

Excerpt from Text Book of Abdominal Surgery: A Clinical Manual for Practitioners and Students IT is sometimes of advantage to systematise our knowledge of an advancing art, especially when it is one of recent and rapid growth. This has been the case with the Art of Surgery as applied to the Abdomen. It may be said that before 1860 abdominal surgery was unknown, or at least was universally condemned. For the next fifteen or twenty years it was almost entirely confined to the removal of tumours of the ovaries and it was not until about the year 1880 that operations on other abdominal organs became at all general. Now, such operations have been performed on every organ in the abdomen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. War Surgery of the Abdomen (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from War Surgery of the Abdomen This Book contains the experiences in abdominal surgery of a sector of the battle line over a period of thirty months. It is founded on the practice of many surgeons, working under different conditions and in different hospitals. The personal equation and influence of locality have thus been largely eliminated. It is hoped, therefore, that the figures quoted may present a standard with which other surgeons can compare their results.
