The librar consisting principally of ecclesiastical writers and some of t e earlier British classics, is in these Cloisters. On the north side are the Hundred Steps, a descent of 18 stone stairs in the castle wall, at the foot of which is a ostern gate, studded with iron bolts, Opens upon a small plat orm, whence a flight of 122 steps winds round the brow of the hill, having another gate at the bottom, communicating with Thames-street.
