Russia as It Really Is (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Russia as It Really Is I do not challenge the rights of any man. But it is unfortunate when a few scribbling pens can lead a nation to false impressions. And here I would point out that the Russian immigrant to this country knows about as much of his own country as the average street pedlar in Whitechapel knows of the British Empire. I took some friends of mine one day to White chapel to demonstrate this very fact. I gave them leave to select their own subjects for examination. They found the man they wanted, and we sat down to talk. He was a well-dressed man who could read and write Russian. With Poor Immigrants to America (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from With Poor Immigrants to America Dressed, well housed, comfortable. America is raging against drink, against the exploitation of immigrants, against the fate of the white slave, against any one who has done anything immoral. It will nationally expel a Russian genius like Gorky. It makes great difficulty of admitting to its shores any one who has ever been in prison. It is so in earnest about the future of America that it has set up what is almost an insult to Europe - the ex amination of Ellis Island. Any one who has gone through the ordeal of the poor emigrant, as I did, going into America with a party of poor Russians in the steerage, and has been medically examined and clerically cross-questioned about his life and ethics, knows that America is a materialist and pro gressive country, and that she is no longer a harbour of. Refuge for the weak, but a place where a nation is determined to have health and strength and prosperity. The Russian Immigrant

Book Description

Excerpt from The Russian Immigrant Sociology must begin its investigations with observation. As Dr. Giddings says of it, "Description and history will keep well in advance of explanation." Of such a study as The Russian Immigrant, this is especially true. Moreover, this subject does not readily lend itself to adequate statistical treatment - the data thus far collected by our Federal Government are too meager, and to attempt an independent investigation would involve large resources and an extensive organization. The present monograph is an attempt to describe only the main social forces impinging on the Russian in America, and their inevitable effect on his mind. Of many shortcomings in this treatise, the writer is very much aware. At best it can be but an approximation of conditions among the majority of Russians in this country. The reader must bear in mind that the research was made during a period when the Russian's attitude was affected by the great social upheaval in his native land, and must remember that in America one result of the war spirit was a series of repressive measures against aliens, especially Russians. The Imperial Wife

Book Description

"The Imperial Wife is a smart, engaging novel that parallels two fascinating worlds and two singular women. Irina Reyn writes beautifully of immigrants, art and the vagaries of love". --Jess Walter, National Book Award finalist and author of the New York Times bestseller, Beautiful Ruins Two women's lives collide when a priceless Russian artifact comes to light. Tanya Kagan, a rising specialist in Russian art at a top New York auction house, is trying to entice Russia's wealthy oligarchs to bid on the biggest sale of her career, The Order of Saint Catherine, while making sense of the sudden and unexplained departure of her husband. As questions arise over the provenance of the Order and auction fever kicks in, Reyn takes us into the world of Catherine the Great, the infamous 18th-century empress who may have owned the priceless artifact, and who it turns out faced many of the same issues Tanya wrestles with in her own life. Suspenseful and beautifully written, The Imperial Wife asks whether we view female ambition any differently today than we did in the past. Can a contemporary marriage withstand an “Imperial Wife”?

The Immigrant Jew in America (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Immigrant Jew in America The study of the immigrant Jew in America undertaken in this work has been subdivided designedly to assure a competence and accuracy of report beyond the possible attainment of any single investigator. Absolutely no restriction beyond the necessary limitation of space was imposed on any contributor, for none were engaged whose reliability and special knowledge of the assigned field of inquiry were open to question. The consequent independence of view gives exceptional weight to the substantial concurrence of the reports in each division of the field in their exhibit of the characteristics, conditions, and advance of the Jewish emigration to this country from Russia. Our work begins with a clear marking of the distinct elements of the Jewish population in the United States. This is followed by an informing exhibit of the Jew and his environment in Russia and of the oppression which has fettered his progress and denied him even a bare pittance and right to life, irresistibly forcing him to seek a refuge and home in other lands. This general introduction closes with a comprehensive survey of the entry of the persecuted immigrant into the United States and the progress of his adaptation to the novel conditions of life in this land of the free. In the following divisions of the work the studies of characteristics and condition are pursued in detail. The chief seats of Jewish settlement in this country, in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago, are selected for the range of their exhibits, presenting the struggles and progress of the Jew under the most exacting conditions of living and competition in this country. These settlements are first surveyed broadly with graphic presentations of the general aspect. Then in succession the social conditions and life are presented under the headings of philanthropy, covering the organizations of relief and the promotion of self-help, economic and industrial conditions, religious activity, educational influences, amusements and social life, politics, health and sanitation, law and litigation.
