Friedrich Max Müller and the Sacred Books of the East

Book Description

This volume offers a critical analysis of one the most ambitious editorial projects of late Victorian Britain: the edition of the fifty substantial volumes of the Sacred Books of the East (1879-1910). The series was edited and conceptualized by Friedrich Max Müller (1823-1900), a world-famous German-born philologist, orientalist, and religious scholar. Müller and his influential Oxford colleagues secured financial support from the India Office of the British Empire and from Oxford University Press. Arie L. Molendijk documents how the series has become a landmark in the development of the humanities-especially the study of religion and language-in the second half of the nineteenth century. The edition also contributed significantly to the Western perception of the 'religious' or even 'mystic' East, which was textually represented in English translations. The series was a token of the rise of 'big science' and textualized the East, by selecting their 'sacred books' and bringing them under the power of western scholarship.

APOCATASTASIS (Paperback)

Book Description

Strokes of genius come rarely in life. This is one of those. APOCATASTASIS* is an extraordinary work. In simple, clear language, Lips takes the reader to a deeper understanding of the planets, their dignities and debilities, and on to a "world formula" that brings order to chaos and that will change our world-view. The experienced teacher Heisenberg would only examine the work of his pupils when the result was simple and aesthetically beautiful. The result presented by Lips is simple and beautiful. His astrological research has enabled him to discover the law that thinkers of all cultures have been searching for since time immemorial. The principles of his symmetrical theory are now seen to be inevitable. * not to be confused with the Christian or Stoic meaning of this term, is the astrological teaching of the eternal cycle of the celestial rulers (planets) and their rulership over all things and the zodiac signs.

Lao Tzu: Tao Te Ching

Book Description

"Ursula K. Le Guin, a student of the Tao Te Ching for more than fifty years, offers her own thoughtful rendering of the Taoist scripture. Seaton to develop a version that lets the ancient text speak in a fresh way to modern people, while remaining faithful to the original Chinese. This rendition reveals the Tao Te Ching's immediate relevance and power, its depth and refreshing humor, illustrating better than ever before why it has been so loved for more than 2,500 years. Included are Le Guin's own personal commentary and notes along with two audio CDs of the text read by the author, with original music composed and performed by Todd Barton."--Publisher's website.
