In a holistic approach to documenting a child's occupational strengths and challenges, the SCOPE enables practitioners to focus on participation and can be used with children and youth ages birth to 21 in a range of practice contexts, such as school, home, inpatient and community practice settings. With ratings based on each child's unique developmental trajectory, SCOPE can capture the strengths and challenges of children of all abilities. Presented in 2 parts with specific learning objectives for each, Part I introduces the theoretical concepts underlying the SCOPE and presents several methods for gathering information for ratings and familiarizes practitioners with the SCOPE rating scale and items. A video case has been included along with a written case summary. Part II examines goal writing and the application of the SCOPE and builds on the video case study presented in Part I. Participants will be able to interpret the SCOPE rating, use the knowledge to develop goals and interventions that are theory based and occupation centered, and become familiar with resources that support participation-focused goal-writing and planning interventions based on the Model of Human Occupation. Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment.
