1918 Class Book

Book Description

Excerpt from 1918 Class Book: Capre Diem This band of shivering young beings, frightened beyond measure, now composes the respected and revered Senior class of nineteen hundred and eighteen. Starting to climb, as we did, from a more advanced position than most entering classes, we climbed steadily until now at the time of our graduation we stand on a step much higher than any former class has stood on the day of its graduation. After the first few months of trials and tribulations, we became a very serious and studious body, and we left in June with flying colors. By our good behavior this first year we succeeded in getting the faculty interested in us and we have tried to keep that interest ever since. During our second year a courtesy campaign was started. The members of '18 certainly worked their hardest to obtain the ends for which this movement was begun. At this time, too, the boys began to be interested in athletics of all kinds and the coach found some of the lads to be very promising, which their skill in after years has shown. When we became Juniors the first important event, naturally, was to choose our class officers. We surely lived up to all expectations and our four officers could not be improved upon. Our class party was a success in every way, and in the prize speaking contest we came out even with the Seniors. The Stage in America 1897-1900 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Stage in America 1897-1900 Besides these general problems, there are a hundred lesser difficulties for the critic. What has seemed genius appears as only cleverness, and talent comes to be seen as merely personal Charm. How tell the actor's contribution from the play wright's; the interest of the subject from its treat ment? A prominent American manager, visiting London, looking for plays, after a bad dinner poorly served, was crowded into the middle of a back row. He refused the comedy. A few nights later he dined with the dramatist, went again to see his play, and sat near the stage. He then bought the comedy, which turned out to be one of his greatest successes.
