The State Pen Work Book

Book Description

This is a neuroscience-oriented brainsmart program designed to help struggling, yet motivated, adults (especially those in prison) learn the tools and techniques for success (i.e. the skills needed to obtain stable and meaningful employment). Students learn the fundamentals of how the brain works in order to answer two questions: 1) Who am I? and, 2) Why do I behave as I do? --The goal is to ""dial-in"" who one needs to be in the moment. This program has been taught in Nevada State prisons and to Nevada inmates since 2013.

Virginia State Penitentiary: A Notorious History

Book Description

Thomas Jefferson developed the idea for the Virginia State Penitentiary and set the standard for the future of the American prison system. Designed by U.S. Capitol and White House architect Benjamin Latrobe, the "Pen" opened its doors in 1800. Vice President Aaron Burr was incarcerated there in 1807 as he awaited trial for treason. The prison endured severe overcrowding, three fires, an earthquake and numerous riots. More than 240 prisoners were executed there by electric chair. At one time, the ACLU called it the "most shameful prison in America." The institution was plagued by racial injustice, eugenics experiments and the presence of children imprisoned among adults. Join author Dale Brumfield as he charts the 190-year history of the iconic prison.

The State Pen Work Book

Book Description

The State Pen Work Book is the foundation for Novum-U's 4-week Apprentice course. Each year it helps over 1,000 students in all Nevada prisons and camps learn skills needed to become successful by cultivating a financially secure life of meaning and purpose. Since 2011, Novum-U relentlessly pursues two goals: 1) getting qualified people out of prison and 2) helping them learn the skills needed to stay out of prison [for good!]. Qualified individuals can join Novum-U as full-time students upon release from prison. Our goal is to help students identify and obtain career-oriented employment that is stable and meaningful to the student because such work is the best way to break the chains of recidivism. Unfortunately most returning citizens cannot easily obtain such work; (not because they are ex-felons) because they don't have the necessary skills --they need to learn the skills needed for the career. Novum-U helps its students learn such skills. However, in order to properly learn the necessary skills, students also need their basic needs met (Novum-U also provides housing, clothing, hygiene, smartphone, transportation, etc.) along with mental health counseling, education and foundational employment (i.e., all the things needed to create the highest probability of success). Novum-U is an independent, financially sustainable, business that receives no government grants which means that it must produce services that people are willing to pay for.
