He entered the Royal Engineers in 1852, and saw service before Sebastopol, where he was wounded, and was afterwards engaged in arranging the new frontier between Turkey and Russia. In 1863 he commanded the Chinese army that sup pressed the Taeping Rebellion, and in 1872 was employed for two years as one of the Danube Commissioners.
