The Story of Our Army From Colonial Days to the Present Time

Book Description

Excerpt from The Story of Our Army From Colonial Days to the Present Time, Vol. 2 The Campaign of Shiloh - The Army and Navy Invest New Madrid and Island No. 10 - Grant's Army Advances to Pittsburg Landing - Battle of Shiloh - Far Reaching Consequences of the Confederate Reverse. Meantime there had been hard fighting in the West with the broad general result that the advance into the Confederacy which Grant had begun with the capture of Forts Henry and Donelson had been stubbornly maintained. The Confederate armies had in the main been pushed back out of Tennessee. On the west bank of the Mississippi, New Madrid was the objective of a powerful military and naval expedition under General Pope and Commodore Foote, and together with the fortifications on Island No. 10, a sand bar in the middle of the river, long since washed away, gave the Federal forces serious occupation for many weeks. In the main the operations against these works were approaches by parallels and a vigorous bombardment. April 5th General Beauregard telegraphed to Richmond concerning the attack on New Madrid: "The enemy has thrown three thousand shells and burned fifty tons of gunpowder without injuring the effectiveness of our works, and killing but one man." The gunboats naturally took an active part in this cannonade, and the soldiers in the cold and muddy trenches by which New Madrid was hemmed in used to get impatient over the ineffective firing. "Well, what is the navy doing to-day?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Story of Our Army From Colonial Days to the Present Time

Book Description

Excerpt from The Story of Our Army From Colonial Days to the Present Time, Vol. 1 Two lanterns gleaming in the belfry of the Old North Church, which still stands looking down upon the Copp's Hill burying ground in Boston and upon the huddled homes of innumerable Italians who have made that part of the ancient American city their home, signalled the beginning of the American Revolution. Their flickering light faintly illumined the birth of the United States of America. On the farther shore of the tidal River Charles, on that midnight of April 18, 1775, stood Paul Revere, a young engraver of Boston, who had been often used as a courier by the Committee of Safety, which had been formed among the Colonists to resist British aggressions. It was vague rumor that the British, long cooped up in Boston, would move that night to Lexington and Concord to destroy the munitions of war that the Colonists had gathered there in distrust of what the future might have in store for them. More than that it was the British purpose to seize the bodies of two "pestilent agitators," John Hancock, whose name was afterward writ large at the head of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and stout Sam Adams, who deserves if does any man the title of "Father of the American Revolution." America and Her Army (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from America and Her Army American Government supplies the usual food and clothing to the army, and has done it, upon the whole, regularly and copiously. But the agents of the American people are every where present with ample stores of everything which men require, to place it beyond all doubt that the American soldier shall suffer no discomfort which it is possible to avert. There is a perfect fitness in this arrangement. For of this war it may be said, without qualification or reserve, that it is the war or the people. N 0 Government made it. It was from the outset the fixed determination of the Northern people that the nation should not submit to dismemberment. This is their own war, fought by their own sons and brothers, for the accomplishment of purposes which are dearer to them than life. It is fitting that they should assume the care of an army which is so emphatically their own. We do not understand aright the spirit in which the American people are fighting out this mighty quarrel till we know what care they bestow upon their soldiers.
