Advancements in Electric Machines

Book Description

Traditionally, electrical machines are classi?ed into d. c. commutator (brushed) machines, induction (asynchronous) machines and synchronous machines. These three types of electrical machines are still regarded in many academic curricula as fundamental types, despite that d. c. brushed machines (except small machines) have been gradually abandoned and PM brushless machines (PMBM) and switched reluctance machines (SRM) have been in mass p- duction and use for at least two decades. Recently, new topologies of high torque density motors, high speed motors, integrated motor drives and special motors have been developed. Progress in electric machines technology is stimulated by new materials, new areas of applications, impact of power electronics, need for energy saving and new technological challenges. The development of electric machines in the next few years will mostly be stimulated by computer hardware, residential and public applications and transportation systems (land, sea and air). At many Universities teaching and research strategy oriented towards el- trical machinery is not up to date and has not been changed in some co- tries almost since the end of the WWII. In spite of many excellent academic research achievements, the academia–industry collaboration and technology transfer are underestimated or, quite often, neglected. Underestimation of the role of industry, unfamiliarity with new trends and restraint from technology transfer results, with time, in lack of external ?nancial support and drastic - cline in the number of students interested in Power Electrical Engineering.

ELECTRICAL MACHINES : MODELLING AND ANALYSIS

Book Description

The book is designed to cover the study of electro-mechanical energy converters in all relevant aspects, and also to acquaint oneself of a single treatment for all types of machines for modelling and analysis. The book starts with the general concepts of energy conversion and basic circuit elements, followed by a review of the mathematical tools. The discussion goes on to introduce the concepts of energy storage in magnetic field, electrical circuits used in rotary electro-mechanical devices and three-phase systems with their transformation. The book, further, makes the reader familiar with the modern aspects of analysis of machines like transient and dynamic operation of machines, asymmetrical and unbalanced operation of poly-phase induction machines, and finally gives a brief exposure to space phasor concepts.

Electrical Machines & their Applications

Book Description

A self-contained, comprehensive and unified treatment of electrical machines, including consideration of their control characteristics in both conventional and semiconductor switched circuits. This new edition has been expanded and updated to include material which reflects current thinking and practice. All references have been updated to conform to the latest national (BS) and international (IEC) recommendations and a new appendix has been added which deals more fully with the theory of permanent-magnets, recognising the growing importance of permanent-magnet machines. The text is so arranged that selections can be made from it to give a short course for non-specialists, while the book as a whole will prepare students for more advanced studies in power systems, control systems, electrical machine design and general industrial applications. Includes numerous worked examples and tutorial problems with answers.

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

Book Description

Interest in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is continuously increasing worldwide, especially with the increased use of renewable energy and the electrification of transports. This book contains the successful submissions of fifteen papers to a Special Issue of Energies on the subject area of “Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines”. The focus is on permanent magnet synchronous machines and the electrical systems they are connected to. The presented work represents a wide range of areas. Studies of control systems, both for permanent magnet synchronous machines and for brushless DC motors, are presented and experimentally verified. Design studies of generators for wind power, wave power and hydro power are presented. Finite element method simulations and analytical design methods are used. The presented studies represent several of the different research fields on permanent magnet machines and electric drives.

Permanent Magnet Motor Technology

Book Description

The importance of permanent magnet (PM) motor technology and its impact on electromechanical drives has grown exponentially since the publication of the bestselling second edition. The PM brushless motor market has grown considerably faster than the overall motion control market. This rapid growth makes it essential for electrical and electromechanical engineers and students to stay up-to-date on developments in modern electrical motors and drives, including their control, simulation, and CAD. Reflecting innovations in the development of PM motors for electromechanical drives, Permanent Magnet Motor Technology: Design and Applications, Third Edition demonstrates the construction of PM motor drives and supplies ready-to-implement solutions to common roadblocks along the way. This edition supplies fundamental equations and calculations for determining and evaluating system performance, efficiency, reliability, and cost. It explores modern computer-aided design of PM motors, including the finite element approach, and explains how to select PM motors to meet the specific requirements of electrical drives. The numerous examples, models, and diagrams provided in each chapter facilitate a lucid understanding of motor operations and characteristics. This 3rd edition of a bestselling reference has been thoroughly revised to include: Chapters on high speed motors and micromotors Advances in permanent magnet motor technology Additional numerical examples and illustrations An increased effort to bridge the gap between theory and industrial applications Modified research results The growing global trend toward energy conservation makes it quite possible that the era of the PM brushless motor drive is just around the corner. Emerging Studies and Applications of Grey Systems

Book Description

This book aims to provide a practical guide by a set of real world applications of grey systems to social networks, energy management, transportation, natural disaster management, etc. As an emerging subject on data analysis and uncertainty modelling, the theory of grey systems and its applications have seen significant progress in recent years. However, researchers are still challenged with difficulties in differentiating grey systems from other similar models and a concise and practical guide for their real world applications. This is especially true for researchers in Europe and North American. This book may provide the answer for that. This book is a result of work within the Leverhulme Trust International Research Network on Grey Systems and its Applications. Readers may regard the book as valuable reference in the related fields.
