The Teacher's Handbook of Psychology (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Teacher's Handbook of Psychology IN the present edition the Handbook has been revised throughout, and to a large extent re-written. It is now between one-sixth and one-fifth larger than it was in the fourth edition. The additions include some chapters which are wholly new, namely, i., xv., xvi., xvii. And xx. Other chapters - more particularly, ii., iv., vi., vii., viii., ix., x., xii., xiii., xiv., xviii. And xix. - have undergone so much alteration as to be largely new. In making these changes I have sought, while keeping to the original form and mode of treatment of the book, as well as to its original intention - as an introduction to psychology - to make it more adequately representative of the present state of psychology and of educational thought. As a result of the changes the work will be found somewhat more advanced in parts. Any difficulties thus introduced, however, may be considerably lessened by a study of the book under the guidance of a competent lecturer, who may probably advise the student to omit certain portions on a first reading: e.g., on the theory of Development, and on Perception. In this way, I trust, a work which has so long kept its place in the department of educational psychology may continue to be a useful introduction to the subject - primarily for teachers, and secondarily for others who in the past have found it serviceable. The Teacher's Handbook of Psychology

Book Description

Excerpt from The Teacher's Handbook of Psychology: On the Basis of "Outlines of Psychology" The present edition has been carefully revised through out, largely re-written and enlarged. While seeking to preserve the original character of the book as an 7'mfr0 duction, I have felt it necessary - ih view of the fact that our best Training Colleges for Secondary Teachers are now making a serious study of psychology - to am plify somewhat and bring up to date the exposition of scientific principles. I have also touched on those recent developments of experimental psychology which have concerned themselves with the measurement of the sim pler mental processes, and which promise to have impor tant educational results by supplying accurate tests of children's abilities. The new branch of the science 'known as child-psychology has been more fully drawn upon, from the conviction that it is only when teachers have made a careful study of the spontaneous move ments of children's minds during the first years that they are likely to find their way readily to the minds of older children, which preserve many more survivals of the earlier mental characteristics than most of us are wont to suppose. The practical applications have pur posely been left in the form of general prescriptions, vi preface TO fourth edition. Teachers Handbook of Psychological Principles to Accompany the Mental Man (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Teachers Handbook of Psychological Principles to Accompany the Mental Man King's Psychology of Child Development (univ. Of Chicago Press). Hall's Youth (appleton). The mind being in its activities dependent on the body, notably the nervous system, it is clear how care fully the teacher should watch the physical well-being of the pupil for the sake of the best and most vigorous mentality, if not for the sake of the physical health itself. In general it may be stated that anything that makes for better health also furthers the mental activities. Therefore teachers should be familiar with the laws of health and school hygiene. In these days much is being said of the evil effects of adenoids, hypertrophied tonsils, defects in vision and hearing, disease, improper or insufficient food and clothing, improper posture, Vitiated air, shallow breath ing, and insufficient outdoor exercise and play. No teacher can afford to be indifferent to such topics as these. Although a teacher cannot know everything, much less do all that there is Opportunity for doing, yet he can see to it that the schoolroom be well ventilated, lighted, and heated throughout the day; he can see to it that the pupils in his charge stand and sit and breathe properly; he can also notify parents of any noticeable mouth-breathing and call their attention to the injury to the mind of the child. In various other ways, too, the teacher can make his influence felt for the improve ment of the body and mind of the children in his charge.
