Excerpt from Politics and Religion: Temporal Power of the Pope Before the Presidential Election of November, 1908, in the United States, President Roosevelt received several letters in which the fear was expressed that the best interests of the country might be endangered by the election to the presidential office of the Honorable William H. Taft, the Republican candidate, because of his Unitarian belief, but especially because of his reputed sympathy with the Roman Catholic Church. Immediately after the election, under date of 6 November, 1908, President Roosevelt addressed a public letter to Mr. J. C. Martin, Dayton, Ohio, which, in purpose and effect, was an answer to all who had written to him on the subject of religion in politics. The secular press of the country was practically unanimous in its approbation of the President's attitude, and unquestionably gave expression to the enlightened and best opinion of the general body of the American people.
