Green Economy and Renewable Energy Transitions for Sustainable Development

Book Description

The fate of our planet hangs in the balance, making the pursuit of sustainable development more than a mere aspiration, it is an imperative. Green Economy and Renewable Energy Transitions for Sustainable Development delves deep into the intricate web of interconnections between the environment, green economies, and energy transitions, and lays down the intellectual foundation for a sustainable future. Drawing on the wisdom of experts in fields ranging from environmental science to policy analysis, this book unveils the multifaceted strategies needed to reduce pollution, conserve biodiversity, and effectively mitigate the relentless march of climate change. Central to sustainability is a green economy—a holistic economic system that transcends profit margins to prioritize social equity, ecological balance, and robust economic growth. Through rigorous exploration and analysis, this volume showcases how sustainable production and consumption practices and judicious investments in renewable energy sources can catalyze a transformative shift towards a more sustainable global economy. The energy transition, a substantial shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, emerges as the linchpin of our battle against climate change. This book deciphers the intricate dance of policies, technologies, and behavioral changes required to usher in this transition. It reveals how renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower hold the key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and staving off the catastrophic consequences of global warming. This monograph is an invaluable resource for policymakers, researchers, educators, and anyone who aspires to be a custodian of our planet's future.

World's Transition Toward A Green Economy: Achieving The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals And Promoting The Role Of Green Finance

Book Description

This book treats different themes which are intrinsically linked and of extreme significance for the entire global community such as the necessity to cut emissions and transit toward a more sustainable and green economy. The content extends to the urgency to shape a new multilateralism and reinforce cooperation to achieve global goods, where the environment comes first, to the green finance which will play a fundamental role for the green transition paying particular attention to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.A particular emphasis is given to the so-called 'Dual Circulation Strategy' (DCS) which is presently becoming the priority not only for China but also for the rest of the global community. Due to the uncertainties caused by the pandemic and other external factors, China has substituted GDP growth with the so-called six guarantees (liù bǎo 六保) which represent the six fundamental aspects of the economy and society that according to the central government must receive priority attention, and protection in economic policy to ensure economic recovery. China also introduced the concept of an 'ecological civilization' (shēngtài wénmíng 生态文明) through green, low-carbon economic development. One of the targets is to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, though the rest of the global community and in particular the European Union with its Green Deal, and the US with its renewed climate policies, are pushing to reach this objective in 2050.In order to grant all these developments, 'green finance' plays a fundamental role for the success of this green transition. Therefore, a substantial part of this book explores the many aspects surrounding this theme. Due to renewables playing a very important role in the green transition, the final part of this book explores investment opportunities related to the development of these alternative sources of energy.

Green Economy and Sustainable Development

Book Description

Green Economy and Sustainable Development Vision, Concept and Applications The current global trend revolves around reevaluating the foundations of development for nations by focusing on the evolving challenges faced by populations. This includes the exacerbation of unemployment, rising poverty rates because of climate change, successive financial crises, and the ensuing food crises. It's a time to confront these crises by reconsidering the fundamental pillars that support economic growth and the developmental policies associated with it across various nations. This unequivocally underscores the imperative to advance concepts related to what it termed the "Green Economy." This is one of the most crucial means to ease the spread of poverty and achieve sustainable development, as per the definition put forth by the United Nations Environment Programme, which states that "the green economy is an economy that leads to the improvement of human well-being and the long-term reduction of inequality, without exposing future generations to important environmental risks and ecological scarcity." The significance of the green economy lies in its essential role in establishing a connection between sustainable development, encompassing economic, social, and environmental facets. It facilitates a positive transition in the requisite processes of production, patterns of consumption, waste, and pollution management. It aids in controlling the reckless utilization of natural resources, energy sources, and the ensuing emissions. The ultimate aim is to transform all these elements into a more efficient and diversified economy, preserving the environment and fostering the creation of dignified employment opportunities for successive generations worldwide. It works towards promoting sustainable trade, curbing the prevalence of poverty, enhancing levels of social justice, and ensuring a fair distribution of income. Several reasons support the adoption of the green economy in sustainable development, especially in emerging economies (developing countries).
