The Twin Sister Planets Venus and Earth

Book Description

This book explains how it came to be that Venus and Earth, while very similar in chemical composition, zonation, size and heliocentric distance from the Sun, are very different in surface environmental conditions. It is argued here that these differences can be accounted for by planetoid capture processes and the subsequent evolution of the planet-satellite system. Venus captured a one-half moon-mass planetoid early in its history in the retrograde direction and underwent its “fatal attraction scenario” with its satellite (Adonis). Earth, on the other hand, captured a moon-mass planetoid (Luna) early in its history in prograde orbit and underwent a benign estrangement scenario with its captured satellite.

Far-Out Guide to Venus

Book Description

At a scorching 462 degrees Celsius, Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system, and poisonous clouds of gas surround it. Spacecraft from Earth have visited Venus. Readers will learn about the amazing missions and the scientists who plan them This book features a center spread with fast facts, perfect for report writing.

Venus Revealed

Book Description

"Early robot probes sent by Russian and American scientists had given us some tantalizing but fragmentary glimpses of the surface and atmosphere, hinting at some of the most exotic conditions seen in the solar system. Magellan showed a planet full of beautiful landscapes, some eerily familiar and some completely unexpected - a world of active volcanoes, shining mountains, and even river valleys carved by torrents of flowing lava. Venus may once have had a wet, temperate, comfortable climate, much like Earth's. What happened to turn it into a hostile, burning, acid world? Our twin has important tales to tell us regarding several of Earth's most pressing environmental problems, including ozone destruction, global warming, and acid rain. In Venus Revealed, David Grinspoon makes a compelling case for comparative planetology as an important tool for gaining knowledge that is vital for our long-term survival on our own planet. He re-examines the uniqueness of our own Earth in light of the recent Magellan findings, while also raising the provocative questions: Did a runaway greenhouse effect transform Venus into the burning oven she is today? By treating Venus as a "controlled experiment," what can we learn from her that will help us survive on Earth? Grinspoon tackles these and other long-debated questions while explaining the incredible scientific advances made possible by the Magellan space probe."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Twin Earth Anthology

Book Description

TWO PLANETS * EIGHT STORIES * ONE TRUTH A collection of stories from our sister planet Ever since residents of Earth have been aware of other planets, they have believed that the planet Venus is uninhabitable. Deep-space analyses have revealed that Venus, though identical to Earth in size and shape, is an entirely unlivable planet. Its terrain is dusty and barren, and its surface reaches temperatures of 480° Celsius. But unknown to anyone on Earth... This information is completely wrong. Venus is home to an advanced race of scientifically-minded humanoids who have spent millennia engaged in experiments and technological discoveries. And they have more than a passing interest in their neighbor planet, Earth, because... Venusians are responsible for life on Earth. Venus itself is a planet of long days and nights. A year on Venus is made up of just under two Venus days, and its six seasons include a volcano season and a season when acid rain falls continuously. The Venusians are constantly experimenting, both on their own planet and on Earth. In Twin Earth Anthology, you will read tales of strange wild beasts, adventure, domed communities, friendship, secret experiments, and self-discovery. Written for preteens and teens, the stories in this book will delight, amaze, and provoke thought. 8 FABULOUS STORIES 50 Days of Rain -- Caitlin L. McCulloch Rescued -- Chelsea E. Venus Read-Along

Book Description

Welcome to Venus! Although this scorching world is around the same size as Earth, the two planets couldn’t be more different. With thousands of active volcanoes and an atmosphere hot enough to melt metal, Venus will fascinate young learners as they read all about the toxic planet. A collage craft in the back of the book encourages creativity, and a glossary and index help readers navigate new topics and terms.

The Planet Venus

Book Description

Shrouded by the thick clouds of hot, dense atmosphere, the planet Venus - Earth's closest neighbour in space - remained mysterious until recent decades. Today, with data from contemporary observations and from Russian and American spacecraft, Venus has moved into sharper focus. This comprehensive book provides an up-to-date and detailed analysis of the nature of Venus. The authors, experts in planetary science from Russia and the United States, examine all the principal aspects of Venus, with particular attention paid to the planet's formation, the development of a runaway greenhouse effect, and Venus' evolution into a planet completely different from others in our solar system. Integrating data from Galileo, Magellan, Pioneer-Venus, Venera sand other space missions, this book summarizes the history of Venus, covers the atmosphere, geomorphology and tectonic history of the planet, and considers its geology.
