Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Book Description

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with a prevalence of 20-30% worldwide is characterized by the buildup of fat in the liver (liver steatosis) with no or little alcohol consumption. Its principal causes are modern diet and occidental lifestyle. It is characterized by metabolic disturbances such as insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress, considered as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. There is no effective drug therapy for this disease; therefore, lifestyle interventions remain as the first-line treatment. Nevertheless, the adherence rates to this type of treatment are very low, so great efforts are focused at finding novel therapeutic agents for the prevention of hepatic steatosis and its progression. This book presents a systematic and comprehensive revision about NAFLD, highlighting its epidemiological and molecular aspects, as well as its prevention and treatment.

Readers will find a summary of epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, imaging techniques, histopathology, and disease management. The book also presents information about NAFLD linked with hepatocellular carcinoma and guidelines for treating NAFLD in pediatric patients. Each chapter presents information in a simple, structured manner making this text an ideal handbook for supplementing hepatology modules in medical curricula.

Very Common Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Book Description

(This book is approximately 3,120 words in length.) -- Most of the general population is not well informed about a common condition affecting the liver, that affects an estimated 29 million people in America alone. Up to 6.5 million of these people, will go on to experience inflammation in their livers or what is also referred to as "steatohepatitis." Many will eventually experience cirrhosis in their livers, meaning scarring/lesions that will begin to appear within the organ, which is irreversible and that can eventually lead to death or in the need for a life-saving liver transplant. The author whose words you will read in this book, is a patient who has lived with a condition of non-alcoholic fatty liver, since the year 2007 (for six years at the time of this writing). -- My case of the disease has not gone on to become steatohepatitis but I have been diagnosed with enlargement of my liver, which is reversible at this point, if I follow my doctor's treatments and a weight loss plan (my obesity is between moderate and severe). While I am not a medical professional, I am one who can relate facts concerning this disease, from firsthand experience with it. I can also pass along the knowledge I have accrued, through six years of extensive research on literally hundreds of reputable medical websites, as well as from blogs and articles written by fellow liver disease patients. While the information I will relate is not as extensive as that one could contain through a professional medical journal, I do believe I can express information that most laypersons would be seeking, in addition to sharing my personal experience with this potentially very serious disease. -- It is my sincere hope that the information contained within the chapters, will prove to be beneficial to the readers who obtain it. - Jim Lowrance -- TABLE OF CONTENTS: -- CHAPTER ONE: What is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)? -- CHAPTER TWO: What Are the Symptoms and Methods for Diagnosing NAFLD? -- CHAPTER THREE: When Does NAFLD Become Non-Alcoholic SteatoHepatitis (NASH) and How is It Treated? -- CHAPTER FOUR: My Own NAFLD Story

Healing Fatty Liver Disease

Book Description

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the most common cause of chronic liver disease in North America. Some people with excess fat in the liver simply have what's called a fatty liver. Although this is not normal, it's not serious if it doesn't lead to inflammation or damage. However, once there's a buildup of simple fat, the liver becomes vulnerable to injury which may result in inflammation and scarring of the liver. Others have what's called Nonalcoholic Steatohepatisis (NASH). Although it is similar to alcoholic liver disease, people with this type of fatty liver disease drink little or no alcohol. NASH can lead to permanent liver damage, as the liver may enlarge and, over time, liver cells may be replaced by scar tissue. This is called cirrhosis. Unfortunately both types of NAFLD are becoming more common. Up to 20 percent of adults may have either fatty liver or NASH. One of the most common causes of fatty liver disease is obesity as well as Diabetes Mellitus. More than 6 million children have one of these conditions, which are most common in Asian and Hispanic children. Based on the most current and comprehensive information available, the authors have created this indispensable guide for anyone living with and managing fatty liver disease. There is extensive information on the causes of NAFLD, the symptoms and signs, and the treatment options like medications, exercise and diet. Because diet plays such a major role in managing the condition, there are 75 specially selected recipes that contribute to a well-balanced diet that is low in saturated fats and high in fiber.
