The Use of Imagery by Collegiate Athletes During Their Off-season

The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency with which collegiate athletes use the five different types of imagery during their off-season. Three versions of the SIQ were used: 1) General in season; 2) Off-season while cross-training; 3) Off-season while doing sport specific skills. One-hundred sixty six male and female Div. I collegiate athletes from a range of sports completed the three questionnaires in one session during their off-season. The main comparison in the study was between individual versus team sport athletes over the three measures of the SIQ (2x3 repeated measures MANOVA) with additional analyses performed on gender and imagery instruction. Results from the study found a main effect for both sport type and time but found no interaction between the two. Results found for gender differences were equivocal. In addition, those previously instructed in imagery used four of the five types of imagery significantly more than those not previously instructed.

The Mediation of Affect on Imagery Use and Self-efficacy in Collegiate Athletes

Author's abstract: In the sports domain, research has become an essential part of how we understand the psychological factors that play a key role in maximizing performance. Previous research has suggested that an individual’s performance can be highly influenced by the psychological variable of self-efficacy (e.g., Bandura, 1997; Calmels & Fournier, 2001). Self-efficacy has been used to describe individuals’ perceived capability of achieving a certain level of performance in the domain of sport (Feltz, 1998). Previous research has also demonstrated that the tendency of athletes to interpret their imagery as either facilitative or debilitative affects specific constructs known to enhance or impede sport performance (Nordin & Cumming, 2005; Quinton et al., 2016; Short et al., 2002). As a result, this study aimed to evaluate imagery more broadly by including different types of involuntary imagery (i.e. spontaneous, intrusive). Affective states of individuals when performing an activity is one of the most important variables for determining general self-efficacy (Bandura, 1994). The relationship between self-efficacy and MG-M imagery has also been closely examined, which suggests that the use of MG-M imagery is beneficial for increasing athletes’ self-efficacy levels (Martin et al., 1999; Moritz at al., 1996). The purpose of the present study was to examine the predictive relationship between imagery use (i.e., MG-M, spontaneous, and intrusive) and self-efficacy with affect as the mediator in collegiate athletes. It was hypothesized that affect would significantly mediate the relationship between imagery use and self-efficacy in collegiate athletes. Results found that positive affect significantly mediates the relationship between MG-M imagery and self-efficacy. The present findings suggest that positive affect is an essential construct for how MG-M imagery use effects self-efficacy levels in collegiate athletes.The implementation of MG-M imagery-based interventions may be used as a way to effectively increase an athlete’s self-efficacy perceptions.

Competitive Athletes' Use of Imagery and the Deliberate Practice Framework [microform]

The present research program consisted of three separate studies investigating the use of imagery by competitive athletes and the examination of imagery as a form of deliberate practice. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the influence of competitive level on an athlete's use of imagery in the off-season, and to examine whether imagery use was related to the amount of physical and technical preparation for the up-coming season. A total of 324 athletes from one of three different competitive levels (i.e., regional, provincial and national) participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete a modified version of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ; Hall, Mack, Paivio, & Hausenblas, 1998) that was designed to measure an athlete's use of imagery in the off-season. MANOVAs indicated that competitive level differences existed in the athletes' use of imagery in the off-season, as well as in their use of physical and technical preparation for the up-coming season.
