Pictures Abroad

Book Description

John DuSolle was a 19th century newspaper editor, a pioneer of the popular press in the United States. In 1845 he travelled to Europe, partly on a diplomatic mission. He recorded his daily travels and observations and they were published in his newspaper, the Philadelphia Spirit of the Times, where they have lain undiscovered until his great, great granddaughter traced them. This book is a compilation of those letters, providing a snapshot of an American's view of Europe in the mid-19th century, a time of tremendous change.
