IT HAD TURNED OUT TO BE A VERY POWERFUL STORM AFTER ALL... This amazingly talented South African weaverbird encounters challenges he never imagined. Tahir finds his way to the acacia tree and sits under it, listening to the heartbreaking sounds coming from the birds. Teary eyed, he surveys the damage one last time, before flying off into the night. The special colored twigs he once held in his hand, were now left behind, lying under the acacia tree as he flew off into the dark. After flying aimlessly through the night, Tahir lands on a nearby patch of Savanna trees, housing a colony of weaverbirds. In the bright sunshine, he listens to the playful chatter of the young birds. What a stark contrast from what he left behind. The Weaverbirds is an imaginative, whimsical and adventurous fantasy of love, loss, toxic relationships and natural disasters. The animated adventure journeys to the home of Tahir who loses his storm wrecked home, but yet learns to triumph over tragedy as he navigates his way through challenges along his path. He learns to conquer his fear, remorse and guilt instead of running from his problems. It's going to take the overcoming of many obstacles along his way to restore his family and attain the love he longs for, the beautiful Zarah. The love triangle Tahir becomes entangled in proves to be another difficulty he must deal with and overcome.

This study of the parasitic weaverbirds is an entity in itself, complete as far as available permit. It is also a part of a general survey of the problem of avian brood parasitism, in the course of which, besides many families of parasitic birds wre issued by the author on cowbirds (1929), on African cuckoos (1946), and on honey-guides (1955). To complete the series the author hopes to eventually publish a comprehensive comparative and interpretive summation of the biological aspects of the subject.

This fascinating study describes the natural histories of these brood parasites and examines many of the exciting questions they raise about the evolution of cheating and the arms race between parasites and their prey. Brood parasites fill their armoury with adaptations including exquisite egg mimicry, rapid laying, ejection of host eggs, murder of host young, chick mimicry and manipulative begging behaviour: ploys shown by recent research to have evolved in response to host defence behaviour or through competition among the parasites themselves. While many host species appear defenceless, accepting parasite eggs quite unlike their own, many are more discriminating against odd-looking eggs and some have evolved the ability to discriminate against odd-looking chicks as well. How is this arms race conducted? Will defenceless hosts develop defences in time, or are there constraints which limit the evolution and perfection of host defences? And why are so few species obliged only to lay eggs in host nests? Have host defences limited the success of brood parasitism, or is it in fact much more common than we suspect, but occurring mainly when birds parasitize the nest of their own kind? All of these puzzles are examined in descriptions of the natural history of each of the groups of parasites in turn. Here is a book with wide appeal, both to amateur naturalists fascinated by this most singular and macabre of behaviours and by ornithologists and ecologists interested in the evolution of ecology and behaviour. The story takes us from the classic field work by pioneer ornithologists such as Edgar Chance, Stuart Baker, Herbert Friedmann and others, through to the experimental field work and molecular techniques of today's leading scientists. We visit brood parasites in Europe, Asia, Japan, Africa, Australasia, and North and South America, to look at some of the world's most interesting birds and some of biology's most interesting questions, many of which still beg answers from ornithologists in the future. Brilliant illustrations by David Quinn illuminate the species discussed, showing many behaviours never before illustrated and conveying the thrill of watching these astonishing birds in the wild.

CONQUER COMPREHENSION WORKBOOK 6 is designed for students to practise and work on answering the different types of comprehension questions found in the multiple-choice and open-ended formats. The passages are carefully graded into three levels: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. The main objective of the Basic level is to lay the foundation to build up a student’s confidence in tackling comprehension. In the Intermediate level, the passages encourage higher-level thinking and understanding. The Advanced level challenges a student to think beyond the ideas presented in the passages. The wide variety of themes and genres also serve to widen a student’s exposure to the different text types which are currently taught in schools. The different questioning techniques aim to develop a student’s comprehension and inference skills. Thinking questions are incorporated to allow a student to exercise his opinions and make his conclusions. A glossary is included after every exercise to help students comprehend the passage better. It also increases a student’s vocabulary and will aid in other writing, reading and comprehension exercises. These varied and useful exercises should give a student greater confidence when doing comprehension tests.
