The Wolf

Book Description

New insights into the changing human attitudes towards wild nature through the depiction of wolves in human culture and heritage. Few animals arouse such strong opinion as the wolf. It occupies a contested, ambiguous, yet central role in human culture and heritage. It appears as both an inspirational emblem of the wild and an embodiment of evil. Offering a mirror to different human attitudes, beliefs, and values, the wolf is, arguably, the species that plays the greatest role in shaping our views on what nature is or should be. North America and, more recently, Europe have witnessed a remarkable return of the grey wolf (Canis lupus, and its close relative the Eurasian wolf, Canis lupus lupus) to eco-systems. The essays collected here explore aspects of this recovery, and consider the history, literature and myth surrounding this iconic species. There are chapters on wolf taxonomy, including the coywolf, the red wolf, and the many faces of the dingo. We also meet the Tasmanian wolf and encounter Nazi Werewolves from Outer Space. The book explores the challenges of separating fact from fiction and superstition, and our willingness to co-exist with large carnivores in the twenty-first century. Biologists, historians, anthropologists, cultural theorists, conservationists and museologists will all find riches in the detail presented in this wolf collection.

Optimal Planning and Operation of Distributed Energy Resources

Planning and Reporting in BI-supported Controlling

Book Description

Planning and reporting solutions in many companies still suffer from poor data quality, are insufficiently integrated and are often time and cost intensive. This practice-oriented book shows step by step how things can be done differently. It systematically shows how modern planning and reporting systems in BI-supported controlling can be set up with the use of data warehouse and big data technology and usefully supplemented with AI-supported features. For the 4th edition, the book has been comprehensively updated. The extensive controlling cockpit example has been expanded. It now contains suggestions for the areas of corporate management (operational and strategic controlling), sales, production, purchasing and project management. In addition, the latest developments in BI-supported controlling with the support of traditional and explorative BI are highlighted, including data mining, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, RPA, chatbots, data discovery, data visualization, app technology, self-service BI and cloud computing. Further innovations concern the topics of data quality and data modeling. The final chapter is "Mobile BI", which deals with the expansion of powerful mobile analysis and planning solutions with the help of tablets, mobile phones and other mobile devices.

Injury Analysis and Treatment Planning with Virtual Human Body Models

Book Description

Life-saving medical and scientific research-based interventions are extending people's lives and saving the lives of people who have suffered from diseases and injuries. This has led to an increased need for the development of technical and medical devices for the prevention, rehabilitation, and treatment of injuries. With the development of computer technology, more and more virtual models of the human body have been developed for biomedical and biomechanical research and application. Reliable virtual body models can efficiently improve injury prediction and rehabilitation, as well as disease diagnosis and treatment. For the past decade, biomechanical virtual human body models have experienced major advancements in terms of development methods, model biofidelity, availability, and applications.

Rethinking Film Festivals in the Pandemic Era and After

Book Description

This is an open access book. This edited collection aims to document the effects of Covid-19 on film festivals and to theorize film festivals in the age of social distancing. To some extent, this crisis begs us to consider what happens when festivals can’t happen; while films have found new (temporary) channels of distribution (most often in the forms of digital releases), the festival format appears particularly vulnerable in pandemic times. Imperfect measures, such as the move to a digital format, cannot recapture the communal experience at the very core of festivals. Given the global nature of the pandemic and the diversity of the festival phenomenon, this book features a wide range of case studies and analytical frameworks. With contributors including established scholars and frontline festival workers, the book is conceived as both a theoretical endeavour and a practical exploration of festival organizing in pandemic times.
