The Works of the Late Rev. Stephen Charnock, B. D , Vol. 5 of 9

Book Description

Excerpt from The Works of the Late Rev. Stephen Charnock, B. D, Vol. 5 of 9: With a Prefatory Dedication and Memoir It is subjectively in the creature, efficiently from God. Ezekiel's dry bones met not together of their own accord, Ezek. 37. 5, 6, or by chance, but were gathered by God, and inspired with life; and not only the last act of life, but the whole formation of them in every part, he particularly owns as the act of his own power; and doing every part of it by degrees, they should know by that admirable work upon them, that he was God. I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring flesh upon you, and cover you with skin; and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord. This work as much discovers the glory of his Deity, and speaks him God in a more illustrious manner than the creation of the world. We know him to be the Lord Jehovah by his creation of the world; but a clearer knowledge of him in his power is added by his regeneration of the soul. The sinews, flesh, skin, all the preparations to grace, are from God; as all the preparations of that mass of clay, for the breath of life in Adam, were from the power of God, as well as the living soul itself. Most do understand it of the recovery of the Jews from the captivity of Babylon; but certainly it hath a higher import, and respects the time of the gospel, and the renewing of life in the soul of all the Israel of God. 1. Because the prophecy extends further than the two tribes captivated in Babylon; for the bones are said to be the whole house Israel, ver. 11, who despaired of ever seeing any good, complaining that their bones were dried; our hope is lost, we are cut off for our parts, ver. 11. Which could not be rationally the complaint of the Jews, who had a promise that after seventy years' captivity, they should return, and therefore their case was not so desperate. D, Vol. 8 of 9: With a Prefatory Dedication and Memoir The Spirit is a persuasive advocate for God among men, as Christ is an eloquent advocate by the rhetoric of his wounds with God for men. The Works of the Late Rev. Stephen Charnock, B. D, Vol. 6 of 9

Book Description

Excerpt from The Works of the Late Rev. Stephen Charnock, B. D, Vol. 6 of 9: With a Prefatory Dedication and Memoir Nor let us conclude by the delight we have in speculations; there is a secret joy in the contempla tion of any truth of a lower size, much more in the speculation of the highest, noblest and firmest truth: The notion may be delightful, when a conformity is unpleasant. We may affect the accomplishment of our minds, without any endeavouring to better our hearts. Speculation is an employment of wit, but the Spiritual knowledge is a conjunction of heart to God and Christ. We may value a meditation of him, when the conformity to him may, be of as little esteem with us as the straw and dirt we tread under our feet. The understanding and will are two dis tinct faculties; have distinct Operations; the acting of the one, doth not always infer the acting of the other; we may delight to look Upon that we would not feed on. Yet true knowledge is always attended with a delight; 74v hen wisdom enters into thy heart and knowledge is pleasant to thy seal, Prov. 2. 10. The more innate light there is in the eye, the more the eye delights in the beams which from without strike upon it: the more darkness in the eye, the less pleasure in the sun - shine. He that loves his lusts, hates the light which discovers their ugliness, he that loves God, loves the light which discovers his beauty.
