A Dictionary of American Authors (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Dictionary of American Authors Th! Present volume is an outgrowth of the writer's Handbook of American Authors, first published in 1884, several features which the judgment of the public approved in the earlier work having been retained in this. Without pretending to contain an exhaustive list of American writers, it may neverthe less lay claim to be fairly inclusive, as the more than six thousand names herein mentioned will serve to show. A few names that might naturally be looked for here have been omitted at the request of their owners; while some others have not been included, for the reason that diligent search failed to discover any trustworthy data concerning them. Here and there, too, the reader may chance upon unfilled dates of birth, or initials unexpauded. Yet in the ma iority of such cases application by letter made directly to the owners of the names aforesaid, or to relatives and immediate friends of such persons, has failed to elicit any response. All reasonable efiort has been made to obtain trustworthy information upon such points, but failure to obtain replies to let ters of inquiry must account for the greater number of such omissions and here it may not be out of place to mention that information of more general tharacter obtained from private sources has now and then been received too late to be of service, owing to the fact that the work was already electrotyped before it came to hand. Stories by American Authors (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Stories by American Authors "And I - what I seem to my friend, you see - What I soon shall seem to his love, you guess. What I seem to myself, do you ask of me? No hero, I confess." A Light Woman. - Browning's Men and Women April 4, 1857. - I have changed my sky without changing my mind. I resume these old notes in a new world. I hardly know of what use they are; but it's easier to stick to the habit than to drop it. I have been at home now a week - at home, forsooth! And yet, after all, it is home. I am dejected, I am bored, I am blue. How can a man be more at home than that? Nevertheless, I am the citizen of a great country, and for that matter, of a great city. I walked to-day some ten miles or so along Broadway, and on the whole I don't blush for my native land. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. American Authors

Book Description

Excerpt from American Authors: A Hand-Book of American Literature From Early Colonial to Living Writers To prepare a text-book of American literature is a difficult task. It 'is utterly impossible to give every writer a place in so small a compass, and, as a matter of fact, justice cannot be done every section of our broad land. Especially do we realize this to be true, when we discover that in the South alone there are over writers, to say naught of the remaining three-sections. While we trust a spirit of fairness shall per vade our work, we know that in the judgment of many wise critics some names will be omitted contrary to their opinion, and many inserted which they think should have been omitted. Every compiler of a work of this kind is subject to this criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
