There’s a Mermaid in My Bathtub

Book Description

My daughter Angie Smith Melson was a very creative person, an artist. She had a son, Sam and a daughter Mei, from China. My other granddaughter, Jessi was eight years old. One morning in 2007 Angie called me and said, “I wrote a little story for Jessi. I’ll send it you.” And There’s A Mermaid In My Bathtub was born. We as a family enjoyed it immensely and forgot about it. In 2014 Angie died of a brain aneurism. I decided to try to make the story into a book that her family and friends could enjoy. I landed at Authorhouse. I found an illustrator in my family. Paul Yakes agreed to do my illustrations. I provided pictures of Jessi and Mei for inspiration. I hope the book can be enjoyed by many eight year old girls, but for me just the fact that Angie’s work will be immortalized will be awesome. Judy Smith

The Mermaid in the Bathtub

Book Description

The Mermaid in the Bathtub is a charming, gorgeously retro retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story “The Little Mermaid,” by beloved Israeli author and illustrator duo Nurit Zarchi and Rutu Modan. One day, a resolutely ordinary young man named Mr. Whatwilltheysay returns home to find Grain-of-Sand, a mermaid, waiting for him in his favorite armchair. Despite his objections, the two embark on a series of very watery adventures as he tries to get rid of her. But ultimately the thought of being seen with half a fish is simply too much for Mr. Whatwilltheysay to bear—what would people say? So broken-hearted Grain-of-Sand returns to the sea in his bathtub, leaving Mr. Whatwilltheysay to resume his pedestrian existence. Mr. Whatwilltheysay soon finds that his beloved landlubber life, however, lacks the splash and shimmer (and bathtub) of his good times with Grain-of-Sand—and acting against all his instincts, he sets off to sea to find her.

A Mermaid's Tale

Book Description

From the seas of antiquity to the city streets of today, A Mermaid's Tale explores the myth and meanings of the mermaid. Beginning with Melusina, the bathing mermaid par excellence, Amanda Adams goes on to describe the seductive sirens and their honeyed songs, the powerful Arctic sea goddess Sedna, and the long-haired rusalki or Russian lore, among other legendary mermaids. As she tells their stories, she also expresses a love of the mermaid that surely no sea-bound sailor could ever match. Grounded in cultural anthropology, folklore studies, and intellectual rigor, A Mermaid's Tale also draws on literature, poetry, and mythology for its insights. It is a book filled with depth and detail as it describes Adam's swim through the ocean of her own life in search of the unusual, the beautiful, and the perfectly extraordinary.
