System Structure and Control 2001

Book Description

This Proceedings contains the papers presented at the IFAC Symposium on System Structure and Control, which was held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 27-31 August 2001. The Symposium brought together experts working in the fields of linear, non-linear, multidimensional, discrete-event and hybrid systems. The Symposium also featured a Workshop on max-plus algebras, focusing on applications to automatic control, communication and transportation networks, manufacturing, and computer science. System structure plays an important role in dynamical system modelling, identification, analysis and control design, where the structure is understood as a collection of system quantities (e.g. system invariants) describing the system essential parts and features that limit the designer in achieving the desired performance. The research covered by the Proceedings papers is broad, including topics like linear and non-linear systems, finite and infinite dimensional systems, continuous and discrete time systems, time-invariant and time-varying systems, implicit and hybrid systems, systems over rings and other algebraic structures, algebraic and geometric methods, stability and stabilization, linear and non-linear control strategies, numerical methods and algorithms, max-plus algebras, semigroups and ordered structures, optimization and optimal control, Markov decision, Perron-Frobenius theory and its generalizations, non-expansive maps, linear systems over max-plus algebras, discrete-event and hybrid systems, automata and formal languages, large deviation type asymptotics. Like previous volumes in the IFAC System Structure and Control conference series, the Proceedings of this Symposium provide a timely and comprehensive survey of the state of research in the field. It will be an indispensable resource for control engineers and anyone with an interest in control theory and application. Altogether some 150 papers are presented, including several plenary papers written by leading experts.

Active Fault Tolerant Control Systems

Book Description

Modern technological systems rely on sophisticated control functions to meet increased performance requirements. For such systems, Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) need to be developed. Active FTCS are dependent on a Fault Detection and Identification (FDI) process to monitor system performance and to detect and isolate faults in the systems. The main objective of this book is to study and to validate some important issues in real-time Active FTCS by means of theoretical analysis and simulation. Several models are presented to achieve this objective, taking into consideration practical aspects of the system to be controlled, performance deterioration in FDI algorithms, and limitations in reconfigurable control laws.

Information Technology for Balanced Manufacturing Systems

Book Description

BASYS conferences were initially organized to promote the development of balanced automation systems. The first BASYS conference was successfully launched in Victoria, Brazil, in 1995. BASYS'06 is the 7th edition in this series. This book comprises three invited keynote papers and forty-nine regular papers accepted for presentation at the conference. All together, these papers will make significant contributions to the literature of Intelligent Technology for Balanced Manufacturing Systems.

Transparency in Government Operations

Book Description

Transparency in government operations is widely regarded as an important precondition for macroeconomic fiscal sustainability, good governance, and overall fiscal rectitude. Notably, the Interim Committee, at its April and September 1996 meetings, stressed the need for greater fiscal transparency. Prompted by these concerns, this paper represents a first attempt to address many of the aspects of transparency in government operations. It provides an overview of major issues in fiscal transparency and examines the IMF's role in promoting transparency in government operations.

Advances in Control

Book Description

Advances in Control contains keynote contributions and tutorial material from the fifth European Control Conference, held in Germany in September 1999. The topics covered are of particular relevance to all academics and practitioners in the field of modern control engineering. These include: - Modern Control Theory - Fault Tolerant Control Systems - Linear Descriptor Systems - Generic Robust Control Design - Verification of Hybrid Systems - New Industrial Perspectives - Nonlinear System Identification - Multi-Modal Telepresence Systems - Advanced Strategies for Process Control - Nonlinear Predictive Control - Logic Controllers of Continuous Plants - Two-dimensional Linear Systems. This important collection of work is introduced by Professor P.M. Frank who has almost forty years of experience in the field of automatic control. State-of-the-art research, expert opinions and future developments in control theory and its industrial applications, combine to make this an essential volume for all those involved in control engineering.

Domestic Regulation and Service Trade Liberalization

Book Description

Trade in services, far more than trade in goods, is affected by a variety of domestic regulations, ranging from qualification and licensing requirements in professional services to pro-competitive regulation in telecommunications services. Experience shows that the quality of regulation strongly influences the consequences of trade liberalization. WTO members have agreed that a central task in the ongoing services negotiations will be to develop a set of rules to ensure that domestic regulations support rather than impede trade liberalization. Since these rules are bound to have a profound impact on the evolution of policy, particularly in developing countries, it is important that they be conducive to economically rational policy-making. This book addresses two central questions: What impact can international trade rules on services have on the exercise of domestic regulatory sovereignty? And how can services negotiations be harnessed to promote and consolidate domestic policy reform across highly diverse sectors? The book, with contributions from several of the world's leading experts in the field, explores a range of rule-making challenges arising at this policy interface, in areas such as transparency, standards and the adoption of a necessity test for services trade. Contributions also provide an in-depth look at these issues in the key areas of accountancy, energy, finance, health, telecommunications and transportation services.
