To understand the world around us, as well as ourselves, we need to measure many things, many variables, many properties of the systems and processes we investigate. Hence, data collected in science, technology, and almost everywhere else are multivariate, a data table with multiple variables measured on multiple observations (cases, samples, items, process time points, experiments). This book describes a remarkably simple minimalistic and practical approach to the analysis of data tables (multivariate data). The approach is based on projection methods, which are PCA (principal components analysis), and PLS (projection to latent structures) and the book shows how this works in science and technology for a wide variety of applications. In particular, it is shown how the great information content in well collected multivariate data can be expressed in terms of simple but illuminating plots, facilitating the understanding and interpretation of the data. The projection approach applies to a variety of data-analytical objectives, i.e., (i) summarizing and visualizing a data set, (ii) multivariate classification and discriminant analysis, and (iii) finding quantitative relationships among the variables. This works with any shape of data table, with many or few variables (columns), many or few observations (rows), and complete or incomplete data tables (missing data). In particular, projections handle data matrices with more variables than observations very well, and the data can be noisy and highly collinear. Eudiometers were instruments originally devised for checking the ‘goodness’ of common air. Seeking to be more than just a chronological inventory of eudiometers, this book presents a unique retrospective of these fascinating apparatuses from the end of the eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. By paying particular attention to the experimental procedures involved over the course of the test, this book aims to understand and explore how eudiometers function, to describe the materials used in making them and the different reagents employed in each eudiometrical test. Importantly, eudiometers were employed within a variety of spheres including human and animal health, gas analysis, chemical theory, plant and animal physiology, atmospheric composition, chemical compound composition, gas lighting, chemical revolution and experimental demonstration. Finally, this book looks to redress the existing imbalance in the history of chemistry regarding the attention given to theoretical aspects of chemistry in comparison to chemical practice and apparatus. The few existing accounts of chemical devices written in the past century have not been sufficiently helpful for the understanding of experimental practice in chemistry. Until now no work that deals exclusively with eudiometers and gas analysis from a historical standpoint has been published. Thus, this book will not only cast new light on the subject, but will also contribute to further research on the history of chemical instruments.

Over the past six years a team of archaeologists, historians and environmental scientists from the University of Sheffield explored the island of Barra.They have discovered and recorded many hundreds of previously unknown sites and monuments, excavated selected examples, and carried out extensive environmental sampling and laboratory based analysis of all this evidence. The first volume of reports focuses on the wild and rocky peninsula of Tangaval at the south-western corner of the island. In this seemingly inhospitable place, on the westernmost margin of Europe, perched on the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the team have discovered almost 250 sites and monuments.
