Now he finds himself at the police station—his "sentence" is to chat online with a nursing home resident twice a week for the next month. Mitch isn't thrilled; what could he and some "old" person possibly talk about? But Mitch’s new online friend has a personality all her own. Her name is Wootie Hayes, and she has plenty to talk about: how she got her name, how much she misses her own home, and how she detests bingo. But she also wants to know about Mitch’s situation. Without expecting it, they help each other face the truth and begin a new friendship in the process.

The Joy of Being Online All the F*cking Time: The Art of Losing Your Mind (Literally)

Book Description

From the author of The Joy of Leaving Your Sh*t All Over the Place, comes a defense of screen time. We’re inundated with advice on how to cut back on our screen time, and urged instead to embrace nature, human relationships, and being present in the moment. But has anyone actually considered those realities? They sound like a lot of work. In her new book, Jennifer McCartney gives thanks for phones, iPads, laptops, the menu tablets at Chili’s, and all screens everywhere. We can now follow a baby alpaca on a webcam, watch a viral video on TikTok, find an ex on Facebook, measure our pupillary distances, answer any question without engaging our brains—there’s so much to learn, with little to no effort. The Internet practically runs itself! We use it for work, for family, for research. We’re really, really good at being online! And that’s something to celebrate. With her usual balance of pithy wisdom, aptitude tests, and hilarious commentary, McCartney embraces our new reality. After all, as Descartes might have said, “I scroll, therefore I am.”

Online a Lot of the Time

Book Description

A wedding ceremony in a Web-based virtual world. Online memorials commemorating the dead. A coffee klatch attended by persons thousands of miles apart via webcams. These are just a few of the ritual practices that have developed and are emerging in online settings. Such Web-based rituals depend on the merging of two modes of communication often held distinct by scholars: the use of a device or mechanism to transmit messages between people across space, and a ritual gathering of people in the same place for the performance of activities intended to generate, maintain, repair, and renew social relations. In Online a Lot of the Time, Ken Hillis explores the stakes when rituals that would formerly have required participants to gather in one physical space are reformulated for the Web. In so doing, he develops a theory of how ritual, fetish, and signification translate to online environments and offer new forms of visual and spatial interaction. The online environments Hillis examines reflect the dynamic contradictions at the core of identity and the ways these contradictions get signified. Hillis analyzes forms of ritual and fetishism made possible through second-generation virtual environments such as Second Life and the popular practice of using webcams to “lifecast” one’s life online twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Discussing how people create and identify with their electronic avatars, he shows how the customs of virtual-world chat reinforce modern consumer-based subjectivities, allowing individuals to both identify with and distance themselves from their characters. His consideration of web-cam cultures links the ritual of exposing one’s life online to a politics of visibility. Hillis argues that these new “rituals of transmission” are compelling because they provide a seemingly material trace of the actual person on the other side of the interface.

Perfect Time to Make Money online easily

Book Description

9 yr old girl makes millions with one idea - why not you? 15 yr old boy earns $15,000 a month - how about you? 22 yr old college student pays off college debt in one month - what on earth is happening and why aren't more people like you in on it? This is your time, your Opportunity. There is a world of opportunities out there for you and “trust me” when I say; the time is now! The economy is changing, while many still proclaim gloom and doom in some parts of the world people are out there, people just like you who are taking advantage of opportunities to make money with the technology that you yourself and millions out there are so familiar with. For the young and the old, but especially for the young who are born with an apparent inherent understanding of the technology used today – you need to read this. Many today are still talking about how the economy is struggling, how the youth of this generation are losing hope for a brighter tomorrow. Jobs are hard to come by for young people, there being taken by seniors because most cannot afford to retire. The fear of rising debt and the debt burden that is being placed on the next generation grows daily – but I would like to point out that, things are not that bad. That many are finding interesting new and fun ways of making money, of creating a future for themselves. Many of these entrepreneurial spirits are teens, young adults ranging in age of 13 to 22. You do not need to be Tech savvy. While many are arguing on the news that the government needs to do something about the high rising prices of a college education, one young man paid off his college debt with the simple use of the technology you and I use today on a daily basis. Is he a genius? No. Is he alone in what he is doing? Not at all, there are many others who are doing just as well or even better than this young man. Ask yourself these questions: Am I using the technology available to me to its fullest? Do I know how to use this advancing technology well? If others are doing it, why can’t I? Consider this: if you own and use a computer or a smartphone, you are halfway there.
