The structural. electronic and lattice properties of superconducting ternary com pounds are the subject of this Topics volume. Its companion volume (Topics in Cur rent Physics. Volume 34) deals primarily with the mutual interaction of supercon ductivity and magnetism in ternary compounds. These two volumes are the culmination of a project. started nearly two years ago. that was inspired by the intense re search effort. both experimental and theoretical. then being expended to explore and develop an understanding of the remarkable physical properties of ternary super conductors. Research activity on this subject has increased in the meantime. The interest in ternary superconductors originated in 1972. when B.T. Matthias and his co-workers first discovered superconductivity in several ternary molybdenum sulfide compounds that had been synthesized in 1971 by R. Chevrel. M. Sergent. and J. Prigent. The superconducting critical temperature Tc of one of the compounds. PbMo S • was reported to be ~ 15 K. This value is sufficiently high that there was g 6 (and still is) reason to expect that other ternary compounds would be found with superconducting transition temperatures rivaling those of the A15 compounds. of which Nb Ge has the record high Tc of 23 K. The interest in ternary superconductors 3 received further impetus when several of the ternary molybdenum sulfides were found to have exceptionally high upper critical magnetic fields. some of them in the neighborhood of 50 Tesla or more. An immense amount of research on ternary molybdenum chalcogenides then followed.

This title is a revision of Experimental Thermodynamics Volume II, published in 1975, reflecting the significant technological developments and new methods introduced into the study of measurement of thermodynamic quantities. The editors of this volume were assigned the task of assembling an international team of distinguished experimentalists, to describe the current state of development of the techniques of measurement of the thermodynamic quantities of single phases. The resulting volume admirably fulfils this brief and contains a valuable summary of a large variety of experimental techniques applicable over a wide range of thermodynamic states with an emphasis on the precision and accuracy of the results obtained. Those interested in the art of measurements, and in particular engaged in the measurement of thermodynamic properties, will find this material invaluable for the guidance it provides towards the development of new and more accurate techniques. · Provides detailed descriptions of experimental chemical thermodynamic methods· Strong practical bias and includes both detailed working equations and figures for the experimental methods· Most comprehensive text in this field since the publication of Experimental Thermodynamics II

The book contains the very latest information on all aspects of heat capacities related to liquids and vapours, either pure or mixed. The chapters, all written by knowledgeable experts in their respective fields, cover theory, experimental methods, and techniques (including speed of sound, photothermal techniques, brillouin scattering, scanning transitiometry, high resolution adiabatic scanning calorimetry), results on solutions, liquids, vapours, mixtures, electrolytes, critical regions, proteins, liquid crystals, polymers, reactions, effects of high pressure and phase changes. Experimental methods for the determination of heat capacities as well as theoretical aspects, including data correlation and prediction, are dealt with in detail. Of special importance are the contributions concerning heat capacities of dilute solutions, ultrasonics and hypersonics, critical behavior and the influence of high pressure.

The present book includes several contributions aiming a deeper understanding of the basic processes in the operation of CO2 lasers (lasing on non-traditional bands, frequency stabilization, photoacoustic spectroscopy) and achievement of new systems (CO2 lasers generating ultrashort pulses or high average power, lasers based on diffusion cooled V-fold geometry, transmission of IR radiation through hollow core microstructured fibers). The second part of the book is dedicated to applications in material processing (heat treatment, welding, synthesis of new materials, micro fluidics) and in medicine (clinical applications, dentistry, non-ablative therapy, acceleration of protons for cancer treatment).

This Symposium was held in honor of the 70th birthday of Dan Bolef, Professor Emeritus at Washington University, who joined the physics department in 1963. The articles in this volume are by internationally known and active leaders in the area of physical acoustics who were selected on the basis of their pedagogical skills as well as their stature within the field. This book provides a broad coverage of acoustics science and is sufficiently clear and pedagogical.

In recent years the availability of techniques and the asking of basic and technological questions has led to an international explosion of activity in the study of solid surfaces. Originally published in Reports in Progress in Physics, Electronic Properties of Surfaces reflects the modern knowledge in this field, presenting critical appraisals of progress in surface science. The book should be particularly valuable for researchers new to this field.

These four volumes with close to one thousand contributions are the proceedings from the VIIIth International Congress on Photosynthesis, which was held in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 6- 11, 1989. The site for the Congress was the campus of the University of Stockholm. This in itself was an experiment, since the campus never before had been used for a conference of that size. On the whole, it was a very sucessful experiment. The outcome of a congress depends on many contributing factors, one major such factor being the scientific vigour of the participants, and I think it is safe to say that the pariticipants were vigourous indeed. Many exciting new fmdings were presented and thoroughly dicussed, indoors in the discussion sessions as well as outdoors on the lawns. For the local organizing committee it was very rewarding to participate in these activities, and to watch some of our younger colleagues for the first time being subjected to the impact of a large international congress. The stimulating effect of this event on the local research atmosphere has been substantial. As was the case with the proceedings from both the 1983 and 1986 Congresses these proceedings have been compiled from camera ready manuscripts, and the editing has mainly consisted of finding the proper place for each contribution and distributing the manuscripts into four volumes with some int~rnal logic in each. In this I have had the invaluable help from Dr.

When an area of research is in fast growth, it often happens that no one single journal is to be found where most of the relevant publications are contained. Such is the case of the physics of intercalation compounds, a field which, by sitting at a corner point between materials science, solid state physics, and chemistry, finds its contributions largely scattered about in the literature. Given these circumstances it is of crucial interest to find a place where the most recent contributions and up-to-date referen ces can be found at once. For intercalated graphite and other similar com pounds this role has been played so far by proceedings of international con ferences, such as La Napoule (1977), Nijmegen (1979), Provincetown (1980), and Sendai (1980). The present book is an ideal continuation of this series, as it contains most of the invited and contributed papers of the Trieste International Con ference on the Physics of Intercalation Compounds, held in Trieste, Italy during the week 6-10 July 1981. The main emphasis is on intercalated graphite, though several interesting contributions deal with other materials, such as polyacetylene and transition metal compounds, or with general problems, such as two-dimensional melting. The book is divided into six sections-Structure and General Properties, Electronic Porperties, Stability and Phonons, Ordering and Phase Transitions, Magnetic Resonance, and Transport Properties-reflecting the main areas of interest, and also broadly the main discussion sessions of the Conference.
