The script is cursive, meaning most letters in a word connect to each other. The appearance of a letter changes depending on its position: isolated, initial (joined on the left), medial (joined on both sides) and final (joined on the right) of a word. Arabic and Farsi are totally different languages, but both with a mostly common alphabet, overlapping vocabulary (nearly all going from Arabic to Farsi), and with ties to Islam. The similarity is a bit like that between English and French. You may feel that using English as a common language, it won't matter whether your children learn Farsi or not.
