Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the New-York State Agricultural Society, Vol. 15: With an Abstract of the Proceedings of the Country Agriculture Socities The Sixteenth Volume of the Transactions of the New-York State Agricultural Society is presented to the farmers of New York. This volume, it is hoped, will be found of equal interest with those which have preceded it. It has been the endeavor of the undersigned to make it useful to the farmers. This is the great object that has been kept in view in the preparation of the volumes of Transactions which have been submitted to the farmers of the State. There is a considerable portion of each volume occupied with the proceedings of the Societies, as required by statute, and although to the general reader these may not be as interesting or useful as the more extended articles, yet, they have a local value in connexion with the Societies, which render them useful, and many of the proceedings are of a character that will interest and profit every careful reader. The third series of Dr. Fitch's articles on the Entomology of our State will lie found of equal interest to those which have preceded it; and the attention which those have received, not only in this country but in foreign countries, shows the great value of this work. We are satisfied that no examination hitherto made by our State, will prove of as much practical value as this. The farmer, the horticulturist, are directly interested in this investigation. And, we may ask, what class of our citizens are not interested? Every tree, and shrub, and blade of grass; every fruit, every variety of grain and vegetable, are alike subject to the depredations of insects; and when their habits shall be fully investigated and understood, what incalculable benefits will result to the whole community. If no other investigation had been undertaken by the Society, this of itself will secure more advantages and benefits to our State than all the expense hitherto paid to tho agricultural interest by the Legislature.
