Twelve Plus One

Book Description

In this Duckhorn's thirteenth published book of poems, she obviously shirks the number thirteen in her title, calling it Twelve plus One. No harm there. She writes her selected poems in six parts where the topics range from alien space crafts, time, heaven and ascension, and much more. Using her trademark knack for phrases in each poem, she is an ever-evolving, free-verse, modern poet. She loves people and wants to share her poems with the world.

The Lotterys Plus One

Book Description

The bestselling author of the adult novel Room bursts onto the children's book scene with this cross between Little Miss Sunshine, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Modern Family. Sumac Lottery is nine years old and the self-proclaimed "good girl" of her (VERY) large, (EXTREMELY) unruly family. Then one day, the news breaks that one of their grandfathers is suffering from dementia and will be coming to live with them. And not just any grandfather -- the long dormant "Grumps," who fell out with his son so long ago that he hasn't been part of any of their lives.Suddenly, everything changes. Sumac has to give up her room to make the newcomer feel at home. She tries to be nice, but prickly Grumps clearly disapproves of how the Lotterys live: whole grains, strange vegetables, rescue pets, a multicultural household... Auspicious Thoughts, Propitious Mind

Book Description

This book is an enjoyable read possibly different to any kind of book the reader has ever experienced. It is an intriguing commentary on life that begs to be re-read, studied and retained for reference, and for others in the family to read and think about the way we live, our relationships, hopes and fears, and making decisions work, as well as asking; how is it some just seem to sail through life?' It is about why we should rein in thoughts and feelings before they take control, interfere and misdirect our lives, and about our habits and customs that betray our basic animal origins, and our primitive tribal instincts that drive us in everything, including that inborn, primordial instinct that asks, is there an after-life? For both believers and non-believers, this book offers a tantalising explanation of what is God, a precise definition of love, and why Satan does not exist. Here is down-to-earth food for the soul, a practical philosophy for contentment. It is for anyone with a yearning and enquiring mind on many matters of importance in their life, and a comfort to those who worry or are just curious to understand life, others and themselves better.

The Land Without Promise

Book Description

Katerina Koci charts the development of the promised land motif, starting from its biblical roots and examining its reception over the centuries until the present day. As her cornerstone, Koci uses Hans-Georg Gadamer's claim that there are two complementary paths towards understanding and knowledge: science and art. Thus, to be faithful to the creed of the great hermeneutist, Koci ventures into both topics, arguing that while science sets out historical-critical analysis of the promised land motif in the Hebrew Bible and its later receptions, art enriches the interpretation with its literary illustrations. This volume places particular focus on American contexts, since the concept of the promised land is so deeply intertwined with American religious-political mythologies, and with the art of John Steinbeck and Walter Brueggemann in particular. By discussing artistic interpretation in biblical hermeneutics, the context and reception of Genesis 15.7 and Exodus 3.8 in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, and the history of the promised land motif and its interpretations, Koci argues that artistic receptions of biblical motifs are crucial for biblical scholarship in opening new hermeneutical and thematical horizons.
