It pays the companies to state fully to every policy holder who is not receiving what he has been led to ex peet the reasons why the company cannot meet those expectations, instead of furnishing a curt statement of what is his due. A satisfied policy holder is an asset to a company; a dissatisfied one, made so by a course that he considers worse than neglect, not only spoils the asset he would otherwise be but is liable to leaven quite a lump of assets. Book Description

Excerpt from Eighth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioners of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1863, Vol. 1: Marine and Fire Insurance It is quite apparent from this that the companies, on the whole, suffered much more severely from fires in 1862 than in 1861. The losses were also less evenly distributed. There were not only a much larger number of companies which last year paid more for losses than they received in premiums, but the net losses of the year were much larger to several companies than any experienced in the previous three years. The fol lowing table shows the number of stock companies that have made net losses, putting expenses out of the account, in the past four years, the aggregate premium receipts, losses and net losses of said companies in each year, and the largest net loss of any company.
