A reservoir is a man-made body of water used to store water for populations to use. Reservoirs are used to provide water for drinking, cooking and bathing. They provide farmers with a source of water for their crops. Reservoirs are also used as a source of recreation for boaters, swimmers, and vacationers. Readers will be amazed to learn about the history of reservoirs and the scientific and technological advances that make them possible. This volume places a strong emphasis on STEM topics, and represents both social studies and science curricula. Historic photographs, color images, and detailed diagrams help readers grasp technological and scientific concepts with ease.

This comprehensive textbook highlights the fundamental concepts and design principles related to water and wastewater engineering. Problems and issues arising from the lack of sustainable conventional treatment practices and potential methods for resolving problems are discussed in detail. The book starts with an introduction to water resources and the need for water and wastewater treatment, followed by evaluation of water demand in terms of quantity and quality. Mass transfer and transformation processes that are necessary for understanding the complexity of water pollution issues and treatment processes are discussed in detail. Pedagogical features include learning objectives, chapter-wise study outlines, detailed solutions to important problems and self-evaluation exercises with answers. Case studies for specific water treatment requirements are provided to enable the students to choose and apply only relevant treatment processes in their design.

Tunnels and Underground Cities: Engineering and Innovation meet Archaeology, Architecture and Art. Volume 10: Strategic use of underground space for resilient cities contains the contributions presented in the eponymous Technical Session during the World Tunnel Congress 2019 (Naples, Italy, 3-9 May 2019). The use of underground space is continuing to grow, due to global urbanization, public demand for efficient transportation, and energy saving, production and distribution. The growing need for space at ground level, along with its continuous value increase and the challenges of energy saving and achieving sustainable development objectives, demand greater and better use of the underground space to ensure that it supports sustainable, resilient and more liveable cities. The contributions cover a wide range of topics, from investing in urban underground space, via effective use of underground space for sustainable cities, and the use of new energy carriers to the compound use of underground space for integrated campus-urban development. The book is a valuable reference text for tunnelling specialists, owners, engineers, archaeologists, architects, artists and others involved in underground planning, design and building around the world, and for academics who are interested in underground constructions and geotechnics.

This practical design guide illustrates through worked examples how Eurocode 2 may be used in practice. Complete and detailed designs of six archetypal building and public utility structures are provided. The book caters to students and engineers with little or no practical experience of design, as well as to more experienced engineers who may be unfamiliar with Eurocode 2. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the Structural Eurocodes, with particular reference to actions on structures. Chapter 2 describes the principles, requirements and methods used for the design of members. This is followed by worked examples for the following structures: A multi-storey office building with three forms of floor construction A basement to the office building with three types of foundations A free-standing cantilever earth-retaining wall A large underground service reservoir An open-top rectangular tank on an elastic soil An open-top cylindrical tank on an elastic soil In addition to the design of all the elements, the analysis of each structure is fully explained. This applies particularly to the design of the basement, and the tanks bearing on elastic soils, for which specially derived tables are included in appendices to the book. The calculations are complemented by reinforcement drawings in accordance with the recommendations in the third edition (2006) of the Standard method of detailing structural concrete, with commentaries on the bar arrangements. This book can be used as a stand-alone publication, or as a more detailed companion to Reynolds’s Reinforced Concrete Designer’s Handbook, now in its 11th edition. The comprehensive treatment of the designs, and the variety of structures considered, make this a unique and invaluable work.
