Unpacking John 1

Book Description

Unpacking John 1 was conceived at my kitchen table. I had just finished an intense study the previous morning. Feeling somewhat aimless that morning, I said to myself, "It's been a while since I studied one of the gospels. Guess I'll read John." Two-and-a-half years later I finished John 1. The first chapter of John's gospel starts in the beginning and concludes with a picture of heaven opening. That struck me as significant. As I explored what was contained between the beginning and the end, I was stunned to count seventeen themes in just that one chapter. Unpacking John 1 is a topical study of the seventeen themes I discovered that morning while eating breakfast. As I wrote, I envisioned three primary audiences: people who were curious about the Bible and wanted an overview of some of its important themes; people who were interested in studying John 1; and pastors and teachers preparing to teach about John's gospel, or any of the themes found in John 1. What sets this book apart from other studies of John 1 is that the scriptures themselves become the commentary for the topics. Each theme is a chapter: "Creation and the Word"; "Life, Light, and Darkness"; "John the Baptist and His Message"; "Children of God"; "Glory"; "The One and Only"; "Grace"; "Truth"; "Lamb of God"; "Baptism"; "The Holy Spirit"; "Following the Rabbi"; "The Messiah"; "The Law and the Prophets"; "The Son of God"; "The King of Israel"; and "Open Heaven."

All Things New

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge offers readers a breathtaking look into God’s promise for a new heaven and a new earth. This revolutionary book about our future is based on the simple idea that, according to the Bible, heaven is not our eternal home--the New Earth is. As Jesus says in the gospel of Matthew, the next chapter of our story begins with "the renewal of all things," by which he means the earth we love in all its beauty, our own selves, and the things that make for a rich life: music, art, food, laughter and all that we hold dear. Everything shall be renewed "when the world is made new." More than anything else, how you envision your future shapes your current experience. If you knew that God was going to restore your life and everything you love any day; if you believed a great and glorious goodness was coming to you--not in a vague heaven but right here on this earth--you would have a hope to see you through anything, an anchor for your soul, "an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God" (Hebrews 6:19). Most Christians (most people for that matter) fail to look forward to their future because their view of heaven is vague, religious, and frankly boring. Hope begins when we understand that for the believer nothing is lost. Heaven is not a life in the clouds; it is not endless harp-strumming or worship-singing. Rather, the life we long for, the paradise Adam and Eve knew, is precisely the life that is coming to us. And that life is coming soon.

Moving Mountains

Book Description

New York Times best-selling author of Wild at Heart John Eldredge offers readers a step-by-step guide to effective Christian prayer. How would it feel to enter into prayer with confidence and assurance—certain that God heard you and that your prayers would make a difference? It would likely feel amazing and unfamiliar. That’s because often our prayers seem to be met with silence or don’t appear to change anything. Either response can lead to disappointment or even despair in the face of our ongoing battles and unmet longings—especially when we don’t know if we’re doing something wrong or if some prayers just don’t work. New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge confronts these issues directly in Moving Mountains by offering a hopeful approach to prayer that is effective, relational, and rarely experienced by most Christians. In a world filled with danger, adventure, and wonder, we have at our disposal prayers that can transform the events and issues that matter most to us and to God. Moving Mountains shows you how to experience the power of daily prayer, learn the major types of prayers—including those of intervention, consecration, warfare, and healing—and to discover the intimacy of the cry of the heart prayer, listening prayer, and praying Scripture. Things can be different, and you personally have a role to play with God in bringing about that change through prayer. It may sound too good to be true, but this is your invitation to engage in the kind of prayers that can move God's heart as well as the mountains before you. Moving Mountains is also available in Spanish, Mueve montañas. To dive deeper into the Moving Mountains message, the Moving Mountains study guide and video study are available now.

Unpacking Forgiveness

Book Description

Helps readers move beyond the wounds and baggage of bitterness, disagreements, and broken relationships. "True or false: most Christian pastors and counselors agree on what forgiveness is and how it should take place." This question is part of Chris Brauns's Forgiveness Quiz that draws readers into his book and gets them thinking about the subject of forgiveness. The truth is, pastors and counselors disagree profoundly on this subject. Unpacking Forgiveness combines sound theological thinking and honesty about the complicated questions many face to provide readers with a solid understanding of biblical forgiveness. Only God's Word can unpack forgiveness. The wounds are too deep for us to find healing on our own, and the questions are too complex to be unraveled by anything but the wisdom of God. This book goes beyond a feel-good doctrine of automatic forgiveness, balancing the beauty of God's grace and the necessity of forgiveness with the teaching that forgiveness must take place in a way that is consistent with justice.
