A Life Worth Living

Book Description

Amidst a sometimes confusing barrage of news about the Middle East, Dr. Bernard Sabella, a Palestinian Christian, offers an enlightening, often humorous, personal narrative accompanied by reflections on lessons learned from his life in a conflict zone. Displaced from his home in infancy with his refugee family and educated in Jerusalem’s Old City before pursuing university studies in the US, he blossomed into a committed educator, scholar, member of the Palestinian Parliament, and director of a church aid agency. Throughout his life Dr. Sabella has never lost his focus on the goal of promoting peace through understanding, and he has never been diverted from his path of absolute nonviolence. A Life Worth Living speaks with a voice worth listening to, alternately anecdotal and analytical, touching our hearts while pondering the past, present, and future of the Holy Land.

Seven Sins for a Life Worth Living

Book Description

“Conventional wisdom,” says Roger Housden, “tells us that nobody goes to heaven for having a good time.” Seven Sins for a Life Worth Living, then, is a refreshing, liberating, and decidedly welcome dose of unconventional wisdom that awakens us to the simple delights and transformative joys of the world around us. With elegance, gentle humor, and remarkable openness, Housden takes us along as he recalls his personal journey toward an appreciation of what he calls the Seven Pleasures: The Pleasure of All Five Senses, The Pleasure of Being Foolish,The Pleasure of Not Knowing, The Pleasure of Not Being Perfect, The Pleasure of Doing Nothing Useful, The Pleasure of Being Ordinary, and The Pleasure of Coming Home. Housden writes, for instance, of submitting to the ultimate folly of falling in love, of celebrating our imperfections, of coming to understand the virtues of the Slow Food movement while enjoying an all-afternoon lunch in a small French village, and of discovering in a Saharan cave that, however extraordinary our surroundings, “we are human, a glorious nothing much to speak of”—and learning to be at peace with the notion. Such pleasures may be suspect in today’s achievement-driven, tightly scheduled, relent-lessly self-improving, conspicuously consumptive culture, but surely the greater sin lies in letting them slip away moment by precious moment. “The purpose of this book,” says Housden, “is to inspire you to lighten up and fall in love with the world and all that is in it.” Reading it is a pleasure indeed. “When you die,God and the angels will hold you accountablefor all the pleasures you were allowed in life that you denied yourself.” Roger Housden, author of the bestselling Ten Poems series, presents a joyously affirmative, warmly personal, and spiritually illuminating meditation on the virtues of opening ourselves up to pleasures like being foolish, not being perfect, and doing nothing useful, the pleasure of not knowing, and even (would you believe it?) the pleasure of being ordinary.

A Life Worth Living and Loving

Book Description

This is a book I had to write; I learned many valuable life lessons while living it and could no longer keep it in. I felt as though God spoke many times to me, directly to my heart and through many others, to tell this story. I never realized I was living anything special that anyone would want to hear until I had so many people tell me to write about it. Little did I know that others were watching in awe and wondering if they could survive the things weve lived through. If facing adversity with immovable faith in my heart could inspire another person, who am I to not tell my story? How could I be disobedient to what I knew God wanted me to do? I am just an ordinary girl who had no one else to turn to but God. Huntingtons is one of those diseases that causes family members to become devastated and lost because even this world of technology cannot help. Surviving accidents or certain types of trauma are one thing, but to watch the one you love deteriorate to a vegetable state in eighteen years gives a feeling of helplessness. Giving all you have to care for this loved one can also bring a family to physical and emotional devastation. Youve heard of those who have a will to survive. In reading this true story of a family having the husband and father with Huntingtons disease, my hope is that you will be inspired to survive whatever it is you go through or will go through in your life. Each time I worked on writing this book, I felt happy and invigorated knowing I was doing what I was supposed to be doing. In reading this book, you can experience every emotion from laughter to crying and many feelings in between. My hope is that this book will inspire you to not give up on your dreams, to live, to love, and to know God.

A History of Nebraska Agriculture: A Life Worth Living

Book Description

Once known as the "Great American Desert," Nebraska's plains and native grasslands today make it a domestic leader in producing food, feed and fuel. From Omaha to Ogallala, Nebraska's founding farmers, ranchers and agribusiness leaders endured hardships while fostering kinships that have lasted generations. While many continued on the trails leading west, others from around the world stayed, seeking a home and land to cultivate. American Doorstop Project co-founders and authors Jody L. Lamp and Melody Dobson celebrate the state's forgotten and untold agricultural history, highlighting more than a century and a half of agriculture industry, inventions and innovations in the Cornhusker State.
