The no-holds-barred, eagerly awaited autobiography of one of Britain's most popular icons - known to millions from her many film and TV appearances, including Dynasty and The Brothers. Kate O'Mara writes here: "Don't put your daughter on the stage, Mrs Worthington! advised Noel Coward is his famous song. But mine did, and when I was only four years old! But my mother was only doing what came naturally, as I'm part of six generations of a theatrical family - we've built theatres and run our own theatre companies around the country, as well as being actors and actresses. A peripatetic childhood and eleven schools later, I went into the family business! For over 40 years I've done everything from Shakespeare to Hollywood soaps, from Restoration Comedy to Cult Television Drama, from Westerns to Pantomime. I have been nothing if not diverse! My personal life, however, has been a disaster area. Rape, desertion, adoption, divorce and numerous relationships with very much younger men. And this for someone who sees herself as an intellectual and can't be doing with sex at all...Oh well, the show must go on!"

"I figure that some of you have been in plays, and so know how a closing night feels. With some shows, it's a relief. With others, you're fighting tears. Robin's theory is that it depends on how you feel about the makeshift family you've created for those weeks." Says Cary Dunkler, chorus boy turned master baker, who forms part of the network of protagonists in Vamp Until Ready. Cary, Isa Vass, Kristy Schroyer, Judy Gabelson, and Mark Shinner have lives that are transformed in surprising ways by working on or backstage at the Hangar Theatre, a summer stock outfit in upstate New York in the 1980's. They make--and remake--their families in this closely observed, ultimately comic valentine to the Socialist-leaning hamlet of Ithaca and to the pleasures of putting on a show at warp speed in hot weather. Praise for Vamp Until Ready "James Magruder's warm-hearted, hair-raising, and hilarious new novel, Vamp Until Ready, is a cross between Winesburg, Ohio and a backstage musical-a panorama of small-town American life over a dozen years, but a dozen particular years, 1980 to 1992, the era of Reagan-Bush, the global AIDS crisis, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. And not just any town: Ithaca, New York, a college town with a hippie hangover and a cast of literally theatrical characters who are always putting on a play. In the novel's ingenious structure, major characters in one chapter appear as minor characters in the next, and vice versa, as if you held up a multi-faceted gem and kept turning it in the light until every surface was illuminated. Magruder's gift is to make you feel like you've gotten to be friends with a bunch of charming, fallible, wounded and wounding, passionate and compassionate people who are yearning for-and sometimes avoiding-connection. Like us." -John Weir, author of Your Nostalgia is Killing Me "This novel is a triumphant romp. We're privileged with intimate portraits of a group of friends as they roam from Ithaca to Uganda, from love to grief, from ambition o reconciliation, James Magruder's Vamp Until Ready is a pure pleasure." -Don Lee, author of Lonesome Lies Before Us "A hilarious, moving novel inhabited by characters who are both outrageous and utterly human, linked not only by a theater in Ithaca but by their desire to be loved. With its seductive, Russian doll structure and gorgeous prose, Vamp Until Ready captivates and delights." -Jane Delury, author of The Balcony

Charley Chase began his film career in early 1913 working as a comedian, writer, and director at the Al Christie studios under his real name, Charles Parrott. Chase then joined Mack Sennett's Keystone studio in 1914, costarring in early films of Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, as well as directing the frenetic Keystone Cops. By 1924 he was starring in a series of one-reel comedies at Hal Roach studios, graduating to two-reel films the following year. In 1929, he made the transition to sound films. Along with the continuing popularity of his own short comedies, Chase often directed the films of others, including several popular Three Stooges efforts. In The Charley Chase Talkies: 1929-1940, James L. Neibaur examines, film-by-film, the comedian's seventy-nine short subjects at Roach and Columbia studios. The first book to examine any portion of Chase’s filmography, this volume discusses the various methods Chase employed in his earliest sound films, his variations on common themes, his use of music, and the modification of his character as he reached the age of forty. Neibaur also acknowledges the handful of feature film appearances Chase made during this period. A filmmaker whom Time magazine once declared was receiving the most fan mail of any comedian in movies, Charley Chase remains quite popular among classic film buffs, as well as historians and scholars. A detailed look into the work of an artist whose career straddled the silent and sound eras, The Charley Chase Talkies will be appreciated by those interested in film comedy of the 1920s and 30s.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 1809) has been called the father of the symphony and the string quartet. A friend of Mozart and a teacher of Beethoven, "Papa" Haydn composed an amazing variety of music -- symphonies, string quartets, concerti, masses, operas, oratorios, keyboard works -- and his prolific output celebrates both the heights and depths of life. In this fascinating book Calvin Stapert combines his skills as a biographer and a musicologist to recount Haydn's steady rise from humble origins to true musical greatness. Unlike other biographers, Stapert argues that Haydn's work was a product of his devout Catholic faith, even though he worked mainly as a court musician and the bulk of his output was in popular genres. In addition to telling Haydn's life story, Stapert includes accessible listening guides to The Creation and portions of other well-known works to help Haydn listeners more fully appreciate the brilliance behind his music.
