Microneuroanatomy is essential to understanding the brain. In many cases, passing on neuroanatomical knowledge is a difficult task to accomplish, yet this is chiefly due to those who are tasked with conveying this knowledge in classes and lectures, or in books. In reality, neuroanatomy is simple and needs to be understood as a tool for approaching the different areas of the brain, not as an obstacle, and the only way to overcome this problem is to correlate neuroanatomy with various types of disease (arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, tumors, cavernomas, hydrocephalus, etc.) This book provides a novel approach to the relation between microneuroanatomy and brain diseases. Each chapter addresses a specific neuroanatomical region, and correlates all the key neuroanatomical aspects with diseases that affect it; further, each chapter provides detailed insights into safely performing brain surgery in the respective region.

The Precision Medicine Initiative, which was instituted by President Barack Obama on January 20, 2015, highlighted the importance that advances in genomics and related "-omic" approaches have made to science and medicine, and it set the stage for their federally funded and mandated integration into the delivery of health care. Whether these advances comprise large-scale approaches, such as The Cancer Genome Atlas, which provides a modern classification of cancers based on molecular profiles, or genealogy initiatives, which seek to trace the movement of our early ancestors out of Africa, genomic technology has taken us closer to developing targeted therapies and a refined understanding of our evolutionary journey. It is against this backdrop that we summarized some of the recent advances in the field of precision medicine, or personalized medicine, as they pertain to neurosurgery. In this e-Book collection provided by Frontiers in Surgery: Neurosurgery, we present a collection of articles by leaders in the field of neurosurgery that highlight domains using a personalized approach for the treatment of patients or avenues when personalization is possible and when it will likely alter the care of patients with neurological diseases.

THE DEFINING WORK IN NEUROSURGERY, REISSUED FOR A NEW GENERATION OF TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE Cranial Anatomy and Surgical Approaches is the master work of the legendary neurosurgeon Albert L. Rhoton, Jr. -- a distillation of 40 years of work to improve safety, accuracy, and gentleness in the medical specialty the author helped shape. Newly reissued and featuring more than 2000 full-color illustrations, this definitive text on the microsurgical anatomy of the brain remains an essential tool for the education and enrichment of neurosurgeons at any career stage. It fulfils its author's hopes to make, in his words, the "delicate, fateful, and awesome" procedures of neurosurgery more gentle, accurate, and safe. Across three sections, Cranial Anatomy and Surgical Approaches details the safest approaches to brain surgery, including: Micro-operative techniques and instrument selection Microsurgical anatomy and approaches to the supratentorial area and anterior cranial base, including chapters on aneurysms, the lateral and third ventricles, cavernous sinus and sella. Anatomy and approaches to the posterior cranial fossa and posterior cranial base, including chapters on the fourth ventricle, tentorial incisura, foramen magnum, temporal bone, and jugular foramen Supra- and infratentorial areas, including chapters on the cerebrum and cerebellum and their arteries and veins

This book documents the state of the art in pediatric neurosurgery with the intention of providing a comprehensive guide to the management of the full range of pediatric neurosurgical disorders that will aid in the delivery of optimal care. Detailed practical instruction, taking into account recent advances, is provided on the neurosurgical treatment of congenital brain malformations, cerebrovascular diseases, head injuries and spinal trauma, infections, functional disorders, congenital and developmental spinal disorders, and brain and spinal tumors. Pearls and pitfalls are highlighted, and attention drawn to the most useful tips and tricks. Information is also included on relevant related topics, including the principles of neuroimaging, the physiological responses of newborns, infants, and children to neurosurgical trauma, preoperative evaluation, anesthesiology and intensive care, and other forms of therapy. The authors are renowned experts in the field, and the text is supported by a wealth of high-quality images. Handbook of Pediatric Neurosurgery will be of value for neurosurgeons of all levels of experience, as well as for pediatricians, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, and neuro-oncologists.

This unique book discusses the management of neurocritical care patients, including basic concepts, pathophysiologic principles, monitoring, treatment indications, and factors that affect outcomes in patients requiring neurocritical care assistance. It addresses the need to improve continuing education in this area, highlighting patient care in the perioperative period. This is the first book to provide a simplified overview for neurosurgeons and neurologists to understand the neurocritical patient journey. It is divided into three parts: the first covers the basics concepts, from monitoring to the interpretation of exams; the second explores general management of specific situations encountered in intensive care and the last part includes prognostic and rehabilitation models, as well as new perspectives. Thanks to the accessible, neurosurgical specific language, the book is well suited for all professionals involved in neurocritical care, including students, but is also a valuable resource for residents and researches, as well as experienced neurosurgeons or neurologists looking for updated information and guidelines.

This book presents an emerging new vision of the brain, which is essentially expressed in computational terms, for non-experts. As such, it presents the fundamental concepts of neuroscience in simple language, without overwhelming non-biologists with excessive biological jargon. In addition, the book presents a novel computational perspective on the brain for biologists, without resorting to complex mathematical equations. It addresses a comprehensive range of topics, starting with the history of neuroscience, the function of the individual neuron, the various kinds of neural network models that can explain diverse neural phenomena, sensory-motor function, language, emotions, and concluding with the latest theories on consciousness. The book offers readers a panoramic introduction to the “new brain” and a valuable resource for interdisciplinary researchers looking to gatecrash the world of neuroscience.
