Drawing (...) City (...) Body, Dwelling on Earth

This international seminar’s fifth edition, dedicated to the theme Desenho (...) Cidade (...) Corpo, Habitando a Terra (Drawing [...] City [...] Body, Inhabiting the Earth) was held as a joint activity between: this C.I.A.U.D./F.A./U.Lisboa Research Project, the University of São Paulo, represented by the Maria Antônia University Centre, and the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Its objectives were threefold: To discuss how Drawing in/of the City and the elements that identify it (geographical area, inhabitants, natural landscape and/or built landscape; present, desired or memorable facts and data) are represented and identified through the presence and/or action of the body, in the form of gestures, movements, interventions, displacements or permanence. To problematise the association between Drawing and City from the starting point of the perception of the Body, assuming this mediation as a condition for the particular construction of that relationship. To identify the presence of the Body in the Representations/Drawings of the City, submitting this event or phenomenon to analysis, aiming for cognitive production. The contributions will be of interest to artists, academics and professionals in the fields of drawing and the arts, architecture, sociology, philosophy, urbanism and design.

Urban Memory in City Transitions

As a continuation of ‘Identity of Cities and City of Identities’, this book covers the arguments around the memory-experience-cognition nexus concerning palimpsests and urban places. As cities experience transitional phases of growth, development, decline, and decay, the author urges considering the notion of urban memory in place-making strategies and design decision-making processes. These explorations would add value to primary fields of architecture, architectural history, cognitive science, human geography, and urbanism. Divided into eight chapters, this book puts together a comprehensive knowledge of urban memory in city transitions. By studying urban memory, the author delves into conceptions of mental mapping, knowledge of environments, cognition of places, and the perceptual dimension of urbanism. Undoubtedly, urban memory plays a significant part in the future movements of humanistic urbanism. Given the significances of scale, pace, and mode of city transitions globally, we should remember who are the ultimate users of those living environments. Therefore, in this book, the author debates two contradictions of ‘memory of place vs. place of memory’, and ‘significance of place vs. place of significance’. Experiential Walks for Urban Design

The edited volume explores the topic of experiential walks, which is the practice of multi- or mono-sensory and in-motion immersion into an urban or natural environment. The act of walking is hence intended as a process of (re-)discovering, reflecting and learning through an embodied experience. Specific attention is devoted to the investigation of the ambiance of places and its dynamic atmospheric perception that contribute to generating the social experience. This topic is gaining increasing attention and has been studied in several forms in different disciplines to investigate the particular spatial, social, sensory and atmospheric character of places.
