The Military Surgeon, Vol. 43

Book Description

Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 43: Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States; July, 1918 We can also appreciate more fully the necessity Of the utmost care in treatment to preclude delays and reverses in the course Of repair Of every fracture coming into our hands. There is no other type Of wound which requires a longer time to repair before the soldier can be returned as a fighting man, and few others more liable to render him permanently noneffective. In addition to the classical causes Of delayed union, such as syphilis, scurvy, mal-position, interposition Of soft parts, infection and interference with circulation, we have to consider the loss Of substance, either from primary trauma by shell fragments or from Operative procedures, the necrosis Of poorly nourished fragments. And the destruction Of nerve supply. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, Vol. 1

Book Description

Excerpt from The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, Vol. 1: Part II; Medical History, Being the Second Medical Volume The nature of the subject will, I trust, justify this determination. Not only do the Alvine Fluxes usually cause more sickness and mortality among troops during war than any other group of diseases, but this circumstance affords a better opportunity for their study than can commonly be obtained in times of peace, so that it has heretofore happened that many of the most important accounts of these disorders, whether in ancient or modern times, have been the fruit of military experience. When I came to study carefully the documents and pathological specimens relating to this subject which had been collected by the industry of our Medical Officers during the Civil War, I formed the opinion that they were well worthy of presentation in detail; and when I began the task of interpreting them by the aid of previous experience, I was led to believe that the time had arrived when modern observations might profitably be contrasted with the records of the past, and the historical basis of the dominant opinions of the present day be subjected to careful and critical scrutiny. A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene But surgery, like many other departments of knowledge which have been compelled to submit to this tyranny, and to contribute reluctantly to the perfection of a barbarous art, has, in its application to the purposes of war, we are happy to say, other and more legitimate ends. It is equally the mission of the Military Surgeon to prevent, as far as possible, all useless expenditure of life. In civilized war fare life is spared whenever a firelock is grounded, or an arm is disabled; and, so well is this understood, the wounded soldier does not hesitate to throw himself upon the mercy of his captors for surgical aid, since he is equally certain of receiving succor from the surgical corps of a foe as of a friend. Consider how much this serves to soften the savage aspect of war; that if battles must be fought, the results should be obtained with as little sacrifice of life, with as little mutilation and suffering as possible. The world is indebted to our profession for this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
