Big Snow

Book Description

An excited and frustrated boy watches hopefully as wintry weather develops slowly into a "big snow." While "helping" his mother with holiday housecleaning, a boy keeps a watchful eye on the progress of a winter storm. He's hoping for a big snow. A really big snow. Inside, he is underfoot, turning sheet-changing and tub-scrubbing into imaginary whiteouts. Outside, flakes are flying. But over the course of a long day (for Mom) the clouds seem slow on delivering a serious snowfall. Then comes a dreamy naptime adventure, marking just the beginning of high hopes coming true in this irresistible seasonal story.

Run to the Finish

Book Description

Inspiration and practical tips for runners who prioritize enjoyment over pace and embrace their place as an "average" runner In her first book, popular runner blogger Amanda Brooks lays out the path to finding greater fulfillment in running for those who consider themselves "middle of the pack runners" -- they're not trying to win Boston (or even qualify for Boston); they just want to get strong and stay injury-free so they can continue to enjoy running. Run to the Finish is not your typical running book. While it is filled with useful strategic training advice throughout, at its core, it is about embracing your place in the middle of the pack with humor and learning to love the run you've got without comparing yourself to other runners. Mixing practical advice like understanding the discomfort vs. pain, the mental side of running, and movements to treat the most common injuries with more playful elements such as "Favorite hilarious marathon signs" and "Weird Thoughts We all Have at the Start Line," Brooks is the down-to-earth, inspiring guide for everyone who wants to be happier with their run.

Winter Fun-Damentals How to Stay Warm

Book Description

It is my desire these principles, ideas and techniques make dealing with the cold climate tolerable, maybe even enjoyable; and your outdoor adventures even better. Over the past years I have learned that with the correct attitude, most any pursuit can be and adventure.Winter time is no different With a good understanding of the principles associated with how the body reacts to cold, the cold climates, and equipment, winter time can really become a "Winter Play Ground." With these winter events are possible and "fun" for us to enjoy. One concept I strive to teach in my books is that "principles" are a tool to control things around us. With principles we can build a predictable outcome. "Ways, Means, Methods, and Techniques change, Principles never do." The wintertime can be a time to bask in the warm winter sun (be careful though, snow reflects a high percentage of the sun's burning UV rays and it is easy to get sun burned or snow blind (sun burned eyes).More than just equipment (I include low cost equipment ideas for getting started, too!) winter requires an attitude adjustment. Most of us are used to spring, summer, and fall conditions where planning is not as important. In the winter, to make it Fun, we must adjust our attitudes, "Things take longer." It takes time to dress correctly, add and subtract layers so we don't sweat and get wet . . . or don't go without enough layers and end up losing too much heat, and become hypothermic. Did you know the head accounts for between 50% and 75% of the body's heat loss? That means, "If your feet are cold, put on a hat." Better yet, "Stay warm." It is much easier to "Stay Warm" than it is to get warm. If winter is not already a flavorful spice in your life, I hope the information and knowledge in this book, about the winter season, changes winter into a fun time of year. I have led four expeditions to the "Coldest Mountain on Earth." This experience has taught me way to stay warm, and actually enjoy the winter time. I am looking forward to sharing this skills and ideas with you, as I embark upon my third career - writing. I have done freelance writing for many years, but I have never tried to make a living doing it. Well, for a number of reasons, I am embarking on this new adventure. While working as a National Park Ranger, I started teaching Mountaineering on the side. This evolved into a business called Hansen Mountaineering I, along with my family, served the people of Utah for about 20 years. At that time life changed some for me, and I stepped into the High Angle Safety, Work and Rescue Industry. Well, it seems to be a good time for another career shift, into writing. Of course, Mountaineering and Technical High Angle Work and Rescue will always be part of my life, but for a number of reasons it make sense for me to pursue writing. I am working on polishing those skills and my work is available on Amazon.com Please do enjoy it, and if you have questions or comments you can contact me at www.HansenSpecialities.com [email protected] or [email protected] Thanks for your interest.Spring, Summer, and Fall all have their own unique flavor, or spice like quality. Winter also has its own unique flavor or spice like effect on life, when we learn how to work with it.
