Wayne's World of Physics

Book Description

My lifetime of study about the universe, the stars with their rainbow of colors, the galaxies with their rainbow of colors, and black holes with the emissions of hydrogen and helium from their polar regions gave me a wonderful concept of the universe which I wish to share with the world. In the book I have written I am proudest of Figure 3. "Plots the 410.2nm with energy levels from one to five x 10 to the minus 19 J". At first I thought I would need a super computer to generate the figure but a little thinking made me realize that I could generate it without the super computer. If you follow the 12 billion light years vertically until it intersects the curved line depicting emission wavelengths you will see a 695 nm entry at that point. It tells you what the emission wavelength will be from the rainbow of colors emitted by any star or galaxy at that distance from the earth when it reaches the earth. I am aware that many stars and galaxies are receding from us which gives a red shift to the rainbow of colors emitted by the stars. I have never read that cosmologists credit the Compton effect as also giving a red shift to the stars and the two have the same effect and therefore they credit non existence recessionary speed to the change in wavelength to the rainbow of colors from almost all stars. The Compton effect is a DISTANCE indicator and not a RECESSIONARY indicator. Among the things I hope the reader will learn and enjoy is the fact that the moon travels around the world from west to east instead of east to west. The moon contributes a powerful force to the ocean current around the world and through the Indian ocean, which alters ocean levels greatly, and is the reason Holland needs dikes. Instant Physics

Book Description

For all of you who break out in a sweat at the thought of thermodynamics, or freeze up at the mention of quantum mechanics, like a bolt from the blue, INSTANT PHYSICS will zap you through the fascinating history of our most basic, yet baffling, science. From the thousand-year search for proof of the existence of the ever-elusive atom to the varied and heated arguments behind the big bang theory, INSTANT PHYSICS answers all the heavy questions with a light touch. You'll learn:* How the Greek philosophers used the sledgehammer of mathematics to break apart the mysteries of the physical universe.* Why gravity is a "romantic" force.* How to tell the difference between a gluon, a meson, and a quark, even if you can't see them.INSTANT PHYSICS is crammed with special features, including chapter summaries, who's who lists, biographical and historical tidbits, and a host of illustrations, photos, equations, diagrams, and drawings.

Symmetries in Physics

Book Description

This book brings together philosophical discussions of symmetry in physics, highlighting the main issues and controversies. It covers all the fundamental symmetries of modern physics, as well as discussing symmetry-breaking and general interpretational issues. For each topic, classic texts are followed by review articles and short commentaries.

Objectivity, Invariance, and Convention

Book Description

From the Publisher: "What does it mean to be lonely?" Thomas Dumm asks. His inquiry, documented in this book, takes us beyond social circumstances and into the deeper forces that shape our very existence as modern individuals. The modern individual, Dumm suggests, is fundamentally a lonely self. Through reflections on philosophy, political theory, literature, and tragic drama, he proceeds to illuminate a hidden dimension of the human condition. His book shows how loneliness shapes the contemporary division between public and private, our inability to live with each other honestly and in comity, the estranged forms that our intimate relationships assume, and the weakness of our common bonds. A reading of the relationship between Cordelia and her father in Shakespeare's King Lear points to the most basic dynamic of modern loneliness-how it is a response to the problem of the "missing mother." Dumm goes on to explore the most important dimensions of lonely experience-Being, Having, Loving, and Grieving. As the book unfolds, he juxtaposes new interpretations of iconic cultural texts-Moby-Dick, Death of a Salesman, the film Paris, Texas, Emerson's "Experience," to name a few-with his own experiences of loneliness, as a son, as a father, and as a grieving husband and widower. Written with deceptive simplicity, Loneliness as a Way of Life is something rare-an intellectual study that is passionately personal. It challenges us, not to overcome our loneliness, but to learn how to re-inhabit it in a better way. To fail to do so, this book reveals, will only intensify the power that it holds over us

Electricity, Magnetism, and Light

Book Description

A very comprehensive introduction to electricity, magnetism and optics ranging from the interesting and useful history of the science, to connections with current real-world phenomena in science, engineering and biology, to common sense advice and insight on the intuitive understanding of electrical and magnetic phenomena. This is a fun book to read, heavy on relevance, with practical examples, such as sections on motors and generators, as well as `take-home experiments' to bring home the key concepts. Slightly more advanced than standard freshman texts for calculus-based engineering physics courses with the mathematics worked out clearly and concisely. Helpful diagrams accompany the discussion. The emphasis is on intuitive physics, graphical visualization, and mathematical implementation. - Electricity, Magnetism, and Light is an engaging introductory treatment of electromagnetism and optics for second semester physics and engineering majors. - Focuses on conceptual understanding, with an emphasis on relevance and historical development. - Mathematics is specific and avoids unnecessary technical development. - Emphasis on physical concepts, analyzing the electromagnetic aspects of many everyday phenomena, and guiding readers carefully through mathematical derivations. - Provides a wealth of interesting information, from the history of the science of electricity and magnetism, to connections with real world phenomena in science, engineering, and biology, to common sense advice and insight on the intuitive understanding of electrical and magnetic phenomena

My Life as a Quant

Book Description

In My Life as a Quant, Emanuel Derman relives his exciting journey as one of the first high-energy particle physicists to migrate to Wall Street. Page by page, Derman details his adventures in this field—analyzing the incompatible personas of traders and quants, and discussing the dissimilar nature of knowledge in physics and finance. Throughout this tale, he also reflects on the appropriate way to apply the refined methods of physics to the hurly-burly world of markets.
