Ben Eglehart is comfortably secure in his life as a teacher at Comenius Alternative High School when he learns that one of his graduates has been murdered. This triggers a chain of events that will lead him to the end of a long, passionate career as a teacher of displaced students. Complicating matters is a half-Apache father in Arizona who looks to be in serious trouble. Ben and his wife Ginny rescue Will Bill from a most tenuous life and bring him back to live Iowa with them and their two children, Tom and Sarah. Wild Bill, who has rarely lived outside his primitive dwellings in the desert climate of southwest Arizona has to learn to adjust to the humidity and snow and other humans. As if matters weren’t confused enough, Ben has to cope with a wife who is undergoing menopause. In fact, the whole family struggles with this dilemma. To top it off, Ben’s son is referred to Comenius from his home high school, Clanton High. That makes it truly difficult for both of them since it means that Tom has been having difficulties at Clanton and that he will be thrust into intimate educational interaction with his father.

Pre-service and beginning teachers have to negotiate an unfamiliar and often challenging working environment, in both teaching spaces and staff spaces. Workplace Learning in Physical Education explores the workplace of teaching as a site of professional learning. Using stories and narratives from the experiences of pre-service and beginning teachers, the book takes a closer look at how professional knowledge is developed by investigating the notions of ‘professional’ and ‘workplace learning’ by drawing on data from a five year project. The book also critically examines the literature associated with, and the rhetoric that surrounds ‘the practicum’, ‘fieldwork’ ‘school experience’ and the ‘induction year’. Through My Eyes


Book Description

Through My Eyes, the first of three memoirs, describes Johns childhood in a working class community in SW England, , and its impact on his lifetime work as a teacher of children and teacher of teachers. John began his career in the swinging 60s, teaching in Leicestershire, then the leading light in progressive education. Perceived to be a successful and effective teacher, he quickly moved out of the classroom, joining the Leicestershire Advisory team, with a brief to support the classroom development of hands-on science activity. Converting an old one-teacher village school, John created Foxton Field Study Center, inviting teachers and students to visit for hands-on activity. In the mid 1960s, his work in the field of science soon came to the notice of American educators, and John was invited to run several science workshops for teachers in various parts of the U.S. In 1970, he joined Professor David Hawkins at CU Boulder, when David opened the Mountain View Center for Environmental Education, a base for teachers wanting to do more and more hands-on science with their students.
