What Would Terry Do?

Book Description

Shortly after the turn of the century, my wife Terry and I moved to the mountains of Colorado. Shortly after that, I wrote this humorous book about our lives and how my hero wife lived in spite of the debilitating illness of MCS – Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. This book was mainly written to help us laugh in spite of our difficulties. In the meantime, you’ll get a closer look at how toxic chemicals affect the canaries (first to react) like Terry. And you’ll gain some insights on how to avoid them. Not only is Terry allergic to all man-made chemicals, she’s also allergic to several foods. Luckily she’s not allergic to plants or animals. Yeah, so you’ve got allergies – take a shot for them! Well except unless you’re allergic to the shot. And, they don’t make one for these allergies. So Terry lives with the severe face pain, the mind fog, the lack of energy. And she swears every time she’s out for a walk and somebody is doing their laundry with some fragranced detergent – her biggest bane. Sometimes she falters and doesn’t bear it well, but to me, she’s always a hero. This is her story. Enjoy! Terry Fox and Me

Book Description

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, this picture book biography tells the story of a friendship defined by strength and love. Before Terry Fox become a national hero and icon, he was just a regular kid. But even then, his characteristic strength, determination and loyalty were apparent and were the foundation for his friendship with Doug. The two first met at basketball tryouts in grammar school. Terry was the smallest - and worst - basketball player on the court. But that didn't stop him. With Doug's help, Terry practiced and practiced until he earned a spot on the team. As they grew up, the best friends supported each other, challenged each other, helped each other become better athletes and better people. Doug was by Terry's side every step of the way: when Terry received a diagnosis of cancer in his leg, when he was learning to walk - then run - with a prosthetic leg and while he was training for the race of his life, his Marathon of Hope. Written from Doug's perspective, this story shows that Terry Fox's legacy goes beyond the physical and individual accomplishments of a disabled athlete and honors the true value of friendship.

Do You Have a Terry

Book Description

My Book is a dedication to my son, Terry. I am sharing with you some of the things that he did as a child and the lessons we both learned. His passion for animals, insects, and creepy crawly creatures was so amazing that I truly thought he would had become a Zoologist or an Anthropologist. I tried to put GOD in all he did and to give him an upbringing full of love and a family-oriented foundation for him to stand on. Please share with others the stories about my "Bug King" and start writing down your own stories, for Memories Are Priceless! Ivanetta S. Thomas

Plastic-Free

Book Description

“Guides readers toward the road less consumptive, offering practical advice and moral support while making a convincing case that individual actions . . . do matter.” —Elizabeth Royte, author, Garbage Land and Bottlemania Like many people, Beth Terry didn’t think an individual could have much impact on the environment. But while laid up after surgery, she read an article about the staggering amount of plastic polluting the oceans, and decided then and there to kick her plastic habit. In Plastic-Free, she shows you how you can too, providing personal anecdotes, stats about the environmental and health problems related to plastic, and individual solutions and tips on how to limit your plastic footprint. Presenting both beginner and advanced steps, Terry includes handy checklists and tables for easy reference, ways to get involved in larger community actions, and profiles of individuals—Plastic-Free Heroes—who have gone beyond personal solutions to create change on a larger scale. Fully updated for the paperback edition, Plastic-Free also includes sections on letting go of eco-guilt, strategies for coping with overwhelming problems, and ways to relate to other people who aren’t as far along on the plastic-free path. Both a practical guide and the story of a personal journey from helplessness to empowerment, Plastic-Free is a must-read for those concerned about the ongoing health and happiness of themselves, their children, and the planet.

Terry's Upside

Book Description

When Rod Lafleur is visited one day by a distant second cousin, Teresa Roberts, he doesn't know what to think. For one thing, he hardly knows Terry, having met her only once and talked to her a couple of times on the telephone. For another, Terry has always ranted on about hair-brained schemes and pots of gold, about this or that one being greedy or not getting their fair share of the family pie: a privately-held, well-known plastic toy company in the Mid-West. Sure, Rod and his extended family have inherited twenty thousand gift shares of the Allen Company. But they have no decision-making power, and the shares are worth nothing on the open market. Terry has a new spin and the Lafleurs are willing listeners until they find out that the option contract she has is not what they thought it would be nor is Terry exactly who she claims to be. Will Rod be able to save his family from the clutches of the evil Terry and his own greedy sister-in-law? Will Rod be able to save himself?

Book Description

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Raw and riveting . . . A compassionate reminder that every alcoholic was once somebody’s baby.”—USA Today Just before Christmas 1994 Terry McGovern was found frozen to death in a snowbank in Madison, Wisconsin, where she had stumbled out of a bar and fallen asleep in the cold. Just forty-five years old, she had been an alcoholic most of her life. Now, in this harrowing and intimate reminiscence, her father, former Senator George McGovern, examines her diaries, interviews her friends and doctors, sifts through medical records, and searches for the lovely but fragile young woman who had waged a desperate, lifelong battle with her illness. What emerges is the portrait of a woman who was loved by everyone but herself. Surrounded by devoted parents, caring siblings, and two young daughters of her own, Terry maintained an appearance of control but was haunted by the twin demons of alcohol and depression. Her story is a heartbreaking tale of her attempts at sobriety, the McGovern family’s efforts to help her—and the failure of both. With courage and compassion, George McGovern addresses a private tragedy with an honesty rarely achieved by a public figure, looking candidly at his inability to save his child. A primer for other families who live with addiction, McGovern’s book is filled with wisdom and an understanding that can come only from sharing his tremendous loss with others. Praise for Terry “Harrowing, riveting . . . A family drama of love and loss.”—The New York Times Book Review “An agonized cry from the heart . . . McGovern’s abiding love for his daughter, and his anguish at the thought of failing her, scorch these pages.”—Newsweek “Haunting . . . speaks for all families engaged in the private struggles of addiction.”—Washington Post “The loving chronicle of a daughter who lost her life and a father who could not keep her alive . . . a simple, moving story that would touch the heart of any parent.”—Houston Chronicle
