This proceedings present current trends in the transport growth. It presents transport solutions both at a micro-level, such as that of a single city or a single company, as well as at a macro-level of a whole transportation system. The transport decisions made by an individual in regards to the transport mode and route, add up to the structure and efficiency of the whole system. Transport systems cannot grow extensively anymore, due to lack of space or the amount of additional costs, so the authors presents new solutions, ones which are innovative and sustainable, while also increasing the efficiency of transport operations. These solutions are analyzed for performance at a scale of individual cities or companies, as well as whole transport systems. The researchers, who are often also practitioners in the field of transport, provide not only the theoretical background for the transport analysis but also empirical data and practical experience.




Refocusing Transportation Planning for the 21st Century


Book Description

Two conferences on Refocusing Transportation Planning for the 21st Century were held in 1999 following passage of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). The first conference focused on the identification of key trends, issues, and general areas of research. The results of Conference I, which produced stand-alone products, were used as input for Conference II. The second conference had the specific objective of producing research problem statements. Its mission was to review the results of the first conference by developing these statements. Conference II produced a number of detailed research statements that form the basis for the National Agenda for Transportation Planning Research. The proceedings of both conferences are presented in this report.




America's Challenge for Highway Transportation in the 21st Century

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) conducted an assessment of broad issues and trends that will shape the future of highway transportation in the United States. This report draws on the findings of 19 working papers prepared during 1987 and 1988, and presents options for meeting the most critical of the Nation's future needs. The report contains an Executive Summary, giving an overview of the report, and seven chapters. Chapter I examines the importance of highway transportation in meeting the Nation's economic and societal needs, discusses national objectives for the highway program and the Federal role in achieving those objectives, and describes past and present governmental roles and responsibilities in the construction and administration of highways. Chapters II and III examine demographic, economic, energy, and technological trends that will affect the future demand for highway transportation. Chapter IV analyzes factors influencing future passenger and freight travel demand, and Chapter V relates the travel demand factors described in earlier chapters to future capital investment requirements for highways. Chapter VI describes program alternatives for meeting future highway requirements and looks at regulatory and other nonconstruction requirements that relate to the operation of highways and the administration of the Federal-aid highway program. Chapter VII examines trends in highway finance and discusses future highway revenue requirements.




The Geography of Transport Systems

Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U.S. Transportation


Book Description

While every mode of transportation in the U.S. will be affected as the climate changes, potentially the greatest impact on transportation systems will be flooding of roads, railways, transit systems, and airport runways in coastal areas because of rising sea levels and surges brought on by more intense storms, says a new report from the National Research Council. Though the impacts of climate change will vary by region, it is certain they will be widespread and costly in human and economic terms, and will require significant changes in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of transportation systems. The U.S. transportation system was designed and built for local weather and climate conditions, predicated on historical temperature and precipitation data. The report finds that climate predictions used by transportation planners and engineers may no longer be reliable, however, in the face of new weather and climate extremes. Infrastructure pushed beyond the range for which it was designed can become stressed and fail, as seen with loss of the U.S. 90 Bridge in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

The conference was organized as a national forum to provide information on new approaches to financing all modes of transportation, to share success stories, and to stimulate discussion on the merits and drawbacks of new techniques, which are known collectively as innovative finance.
