This family history includes the ancestry and descendants of both Roy Ladd (1879-1966) and Mattie Cole Ladd (1886-1944) who were married in 1904. The first section of this book includes the descendants of the earliest known Ladd ancestor, James Ladd (ca. 1782-1827). The second section begins with the earliest known Cole ancestor, Coverdale Cole (ca. 1750-1831). Descendants and relatives lived in West Virginia, North Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, California, and elsewhere.

Joseph Whiteley (1754-1818), the son of Joseph Whiteley, Sr., and Mary Plumbley, was born in England. His widowed father brought him to America ca. 1758, and he eventually settled in Tennessee. He married Sarah Stapleton (ca. 1760-1836) ca. 1775. They had fourteen children. Descendants live throughout the United States.

Robert Gragg (ca. 1732-1796), assumed to be the son of Irish immigrant John Gregg (ca. 1690-1758), immigrated with his father and mother in the early 1740s to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, moving to Augusta County, Virginia in the 1750s. Robert Gragg and his family moved to Greene County, Tennessee in 1787/1788. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Texas and elsewhere.
