'Ingenious. Caputo picks out a fascinating path and leads readers along it with the confidence of a practised pilot' Felipe Fernández-Armesto, author of 1492 'Accessible and entertaining, as well as deeply erudite and constantly mind-expanding' Philip Ball, author of How Life Works From their first appearance on Renaissance maps, linear tracks representing maritime voyages have shaped the way we see the world. But why do we depict journeys as lines, and what is their deeper meaning? Ferdinand Magellan's route to the Pacific embodied the promise of adventure and colonisation, while the scientific charts of the Royal Navy inspired others to plan conquests, navigate treacherous waters and establish settlements across the oceans. In Tracks on the Ocean, prize-winning historian Sara Caputo charts a hidden history of the modern world through the tracks left on maps and the sea. Taking us from ancient Greek itineraries to twenty-first-century digital mapping, via the voyages of Drake and Cook, the decks of Napoleonic warships and the boiler rooms of ocean liners, Caputo reveals how marks on maps have changed the course of modernity.

A sighting in the field is just one way birders can identify bird species. Observant nature-lovers can discover what birds are where by examining tracks, trails, and a variety of bird sign: discarded feathers, feeding leftovers and caches, pellets, nests, droppings, and skulls and bones. This fully illustrated guide-the first of its kind for North American birds-presents thorough and straightforward instruction for identifying bird families or individual species by careful examination of the unique sign they leave behind. It also offers keys to the birds' behavior in the wild. Includes songbirds, waterfowl, owls, shorebirds, warblers, woodpeckers, nightjars, and birds of prey. For trackers, birders, and nature-lovers.

The Early Cretaceous (late Berriasian) Bückeberg Formation in the southern Lower Saxony Basin, to the west and to the south of Hannover, yields abundant and diverse dinosaur tracks, known since the late 1870s. After a few decades of pioneering and discovery, this area was scientifically neglected for a long time concerning dinosaur tracks and tracksites, and only single sporadic finds were reported in the second half of the 20th century. During 2007 and 2008, a new tracksite was discovered in Obernkirchen, yielding an astonishing amount of new and well-preserved dinosaur tracks, cared for by the Hannover State Museum and its cooperational partners. The present volume contains the abstracts of lectures and posters presented during the Dinosaur Track Symposium 2011 as well as excursion and collection guides. On behalf of the Schaumburger Landschaft, this symposium was held at the medieval Stift Obernkirchen, Germany, from April 14th to 17th, 2011. Nearly one hundred palaeontologists, biologists, geologists and other scientists from sixteen countries participated. Abstract Volume and Field Guide to Excursions from the International Symposium, Obernkirchen, April 14-17, 2011
