The Life of William Ewart Gladstone (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life of William Ewart Gladstone In the following pages the aim of the writer has been to present a view at once summary and impartial of the Parliamentary career, political opinions, and practical enactments of the subject of the biography, from his first return to the Parliament created by the Reform Bill of 1832 down to the last day of the existence of the Whig Parliament of the middle class. The Author has not concealed his admiration of Mr. Gladstone in the fields of fiscal; and electoral reform. For obvious reasons he has apportioned a large portion of his canvas to the history of the great statesman's opinions and utterances upon the Church Establishment in Ireland, and upon the general relations of the Church and the State. Some ancestral and personal details appear in this little work, in print for the first time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gladstone was born in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. He attended Eton College and read Greek and Latin at Christ Church, Oxford University. He was a member of parliament for a total of 20 years, representing Chester for 3, Whitby for 12 and East Worcestershire for 5. A singer and organist, he was well versed in musical history, especially the development of Anglican church music. He wrote on musical topics, and one of the views he expressed was that choral church services were to be deplored because "the choirs often discourage the congregations from singing".

Book Description

The Life of William Ewart Gladstone, Vol. 1 (of 3) 1809-1859 by John Morley Excerpt I am well aware that to try to write Mr. Gladstone's life at all-the life of a man who held an imposing place in many high national transactions, whose character and career may be regarded in such various lights, whose interests were so manifold, and whose years bridged so long a span of time-is a stroke of temerity.
