A Genealogical and Psychological Memoir of Philippe Maton Wiltsee and His Descendants

Book Description

Philippe Maton and his family immigrated from Holland to New Netherland, and his second son (Hendrick) was born during the voyage. Hendrick and a brother were kidnapped by the Indians and taken to Quebec, where Hendrick had a son by an Indian wife. Hendrick later escaped and returned to New Amsterdam, where about 1690 he resumed the old family name of Wiltsee (to which his father was entitled, but did not use), and married Margaret Meyringh. A son by his earlier Indian wife remained in Quebec, also using the surname of Wiltsee, and descendants lived there. Most of Hendrick's descendants were by his Dutch wife, and these lived in New York, Michigan, Iowa, California and elsewhere.
