Window and Indoor Gardening - The Cultivation and Propagation of Foliage and Flowering Plants in Rooms, Window Boxes, Balconies and Verandahs; also on Roofs, and on the Walls of the House

Book Description

Window and indoor gardening has long been a popular and fascinating hobby with those who possess an enthusiastic love of floriculture, and who have no facilities for indulging in the latter pursuit except in the home, on the window-sill, or in the balcony or veranda. First published in 1936, “Window and Indoor Gardening” is a charming guide to the care and maintenance of house plants, with chapters on propagation, potting, watering, common problems, and much more. Written in simple, clear language and full of helpful illustrations and photographs, this classic guide will be of considerable utility to all green-fingered enthusiasts, especially those interested in keeping house and potted plants or all varieties. Contents include: “Soil and Culture”, “Propagation”, “Potting and Watering”, “Geraniums”, “Begonias”, “Bulbs”, “Unusual Plants”, “Hanging Pots”, and “The Personal Side”. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction on the history of gardening.

Moisture Control Guidance for Building Design, Construction and Maintenance

Book Description

Moisture control is fundamental to the proper functioning of any building. Controlling moisture is important to protect occupants from adverse health effects and to protect the building, its mechanical systems and its contents from physical or chemical damage. Yet, moisture problems are so common in buildings, many people consider them inevitable. Excessive moisture accumulation plagues buildings throughout the United States, from tropical Hawaii to arctic Alaska and from the hot, humid Gulf Coast to the hot, dry Sonoran Desert. Between 1994 and 1998, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Building Assessment Survey and Evaluation (BASE) study collected information about the indoor air quality of 100 randomly selected public and private office buildings in the 10 U.S. climatic regions.

The Planting Design Handbook

Book Description

Since the first edition was published in 1992, Nick Robinson's The Planting Design Handbook has been widely used as a definitive text on landscape architecture courses throughout the world. It remains one of the few titles written by a practicing landscape architect and educator who is also a horticulturalist and accomplished plantsman, and which deals with the application of planting design on a large scale in landscape architecture and urban design projects. The Planting Design Handbook is distinctive for its elegant integration of an ecological approach with an understanding of visual and spatial composition. It emphasizes the role of vegetation layers and designed plant communities in complex and diverse plant assemblages for all kinds of sites and uses. This expanded and comprehensively updated third edition still provides a complete examination of principles and practice of design for public, institutional and private landscapes. It takes account of developments in theory and practice, especially in the use of perennials, and reflects a variety of media and approaches current in landscape architecture and design. All chapters have been revised and re-written to ensure updated references and new references have been added. Many new photographs of planting and projects around the world have been included, with examples of current professional drawings to illustrate the design process. It is generously illustrated, including a colour section and the beautifully detailed line drawings of the Chinese architect and painter Jia-Hua Wu.
