This first novel follows Kael as he fights exterior dangers and internal worries and self-doubt. Kael learns by the end of the story that the Star Pen balances Light and Shadow. After losing his allies in a catastrophic onslaught, Kael feels more alone than ever and realizes a larger war awaits. The story depicts one's struggle to discover responsibility, bravery, and inner strength.
